Committee: General Assembly of the United Nations (GA)

Country: Republic of Zimbabwe

Topic A: Necessary measures to eradicate child famine

in African and Middle East Countries

Delegate: Rogelio Sada

School: ITESM, C.L

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen delegates; honorable chair of approvals.

“There’s enough on this planet for everyone’s needs but not for everyone’s
greed.” (Mohandas Gandhi). 80 Million people suffer from famine in the Middle East
and Africa and of those 80 million, more than half are children. Fortunately, the General
Assembly of the United Nations is trying to strike this problem down before the year
2030. In general: natural disasters and bad governmental choices are the main causes
of famine, the repercussions it has in a country go from an increase in vandalism to a
very big decrease in a country’s population and in the case of the body’s
consequences, extreme weight loss and death are very common. According to the
GHI, the countries most affected by famine are the Central African Republic with a
score of 53.6, followed by Yemen and Chad, with scores of 45.9 and 44.2. If this
problem is not solved, many, many millions will die, which might lead to economic
problems in the countries mentioned, but the delegations are not here because of
economy, they are here to protect the children’s future.

The country of Zimbabwe is going through some complicated times, an

economic collapse, corruption, a drought and the sudden pandemic of COVID-19. This
drought was caused by a cyclone and it has caused Zimbabwe's crops to decrease,
which furthermore increases the economic downfall, this is because more than 70% of
the population live in rural areas and live off agriculture. The inflation of 319% makes it
even harder to buy resources, making more than half of the population, which
translates to around 4 million children, food insecure. Luckily, some organizations help
the Zimbabwean children on today’s predicaments, but this is not enough to overcome
this challenge.

There are kids suffering hunger right now, but what is worse, is that those kids
can’t do anything about it. That is why the delegation of Zimbabwe suggests building
greenhouses. The biggest greenhouse has an area of 366 acres, and it is currently in
construction, this greenhouse has the capability to produce 45 million pounds of
results. If the delegations were to build multiple greenhouses like this or bigger, it would
be possible to help a very large amount of kids. Say 3, 500-acre greenhouses are built
following the example of the one just mentioned, up to 61 million children should
theoretically be able to get food. The products would be distributed by the GA and they
would be essentially free for the kids of ages below 18 years. This would take quite
some time and it would need financial collaboration from all the delegations, the
supervisor for the flow of money is yet to be defined. And finally, ladies and gentlemen
remember those children are the future of the world.
