She studied anthropology and film-making at Brandeis University in the late 1960s. After graduating, she worked as a freelance photographer in Boston covering anything for small publications. One assignment was to cover a dance concert. After photographing rehearsals and performances, she was inspired to continue mastering the technique of capturing unpredictable movement onstage. She developed an impressive portfolio of dance photography and had photographs printed in the Village Voice, New York Times, and Dance Magazine. Greenfield works in New York City for publications such as Elle, New York Times, and Vogue. She shoots all the major modern dance companies including Alvin Ailey Dance Theater, American Ballet Theatre, and the Paul Taylor Dance Company. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the world and she is regarded as one of the best movement photographers in the world. Fascinated with photography freezing a moment in time, most of her work is composed of dancers who she says, “illustrate the passage of time.” Greenfield works mostly with simple backgrounds to keep the dancer as the focus of the picture. She works in black and white and color, and a wide number of dancers per shot. Many of the photographs show dancers reacting to or dancing with a prop. She also shows movement through the dancers’ clothes in many pictures. There is so much to take in and happening at once during a dance performance, that is so interesting to find one tiny point in time and analyze the movement through a photograph. She has a shot such a wide variety of dance styles from ballet to flamenco to hip hop showcasing the endless ways to move the body. Her work is incredible making it difficult to choose just three to show here. Her ability to improvise with the dancers without any formal dance education or knowledge is brilliant. She captures the theme of the movement in a single frame and always leaves the viewer asking how the dancers did it. Because of Greenfield used color to create unity, the matching color and skin tone and the background is so simple making the dancers the emphasis for this image and the light seems to be coming from the different place and it’s pushing their shadows to the different angle and for these reason Greenfield is my favorite photographer.
