1.0 Executive Summary

This report was commissioned to proposed on Pre-loved Books Booth Programme in

the by doing a survey about the perception of the student on pre-loved booth programme.
This is due to the a several problems that related to the increasing price of the new books,
limitation of storage to keep the old book and also limitation the reference book at the library.
In order to solve the problem, there are a few solutions have been proposed which is by
selling the unused book as a pre-loved item, exchange the books amongst students because
the secondhand book is cheaper and affordable to the student and indirectly the limitation of
space can be reduce. From the survey, the result data has been analyzed and it is show that
students did not afford to buy a new reference book because of the price was expensive and
most of the reference books used by students are not available at the library. Other than that
most of the respondents agreed that pre-loved book is cheaper and affordable to them. In
addition, respondents also willing to exchange the book among them and sell their unused
book.

2.0. Introduction

Pre-loved books are the second hand book that had been owned and used before. The
sellers use the word “pre-loved” to make the books seem more attractive. As usually, students
will have a problem to buy a new book as their reference at college. This is because the
pricing of new book more expensive than second hand book that make they think twice to
buy new book.

Apart from that, students also suffer from small room space. Every new semester, the
new books will be used so the old books will be kept. In this case, more room space was used
to keep all the books that have been used before this.

As the alternative to solve this problem, the survey of perception among student on
pre-loved books will be carried out. These programmes also valid for those who want to sell

1
their old books. By the availability of this programme, it will become easy to find out the
perception of student about the pre-loved books. This survey will be made by online
questionnaire with maximum of 50 respondents.

The objective of this programme includes:

i. To help students who can’t afford to buy new reference books

ii. To help students save their room space at college

3.0 Methodology

3.1 Sampling

This study is plotted based on quantitative method. Therefore, a set of questionnaire had been
used as a medium in achieve the related data. A set of questionnaire designed as the tool and
evaluated by adopting five-point Likert scale. A five-point Likert scale with “Lower priority”
and “Strongly disagree” equal 1, “Low priority” and “Disagree” equal 2, “Moderate” and
“Neutral” equal 3, “High Priority” and “Agree” equal 4, “Higher Priority” and “Strongly
agree” equal 5 are used in the rating. This Likert-scale method has been used by Ametepey et
al., (2015) in his studies to identify and priorities possible barriers to successful
implementation of sustainable construction in the Ghanaian construction industry. In this
study, random method is used to determine the sample of the respondent since the population
1. A sample size of 50 practitioners was determined consisting both gender of male and
female students from all years of study.

3.2 Questionnaire

2
A total of 50 questionnaires had been distributed to the sample from population and all of the
responses received back, where the rate of respond was determined as 100%. At least 70% of
the respond rate must be achieved for considering data collected are strong enough to make
analysis (Nutty, 2008).

The questionnaire is a made by researchers and consulted by supervisor hence finalized it

before data collection process. All the questionnaire was created to meet the researcher’s
objectives of the paper with considering the respondent background. The elements created
including of selected type and the subdivision for the questionnaire. There are total of 4
section in the questionnaire, where Section A cover about general overview. While Section B
as the problems occurred that lead to the study to be held and Section C as the solution that
covers the problems that mentioned earlier. While Section D is consisting about the
demographic profile of the respondents.

4.0 Problems

3
Problem 1: New books are expensive.

Students does not have enough money to buy new books for every subject which is
every student will take at least six subjects every one semester. According to the survey, it is
showed that 52% of total respondents strongly agree, 34% agree, 10% is neutral and both
strongly agree and disagree stated 2%. From the chart, it is can assumption that more than
half of respondent strongly agree that new books are more expensive compare to second hand
or preloved books. Not all of students can afford all the references books for every subject
which most of references books are expensive.

Problem 2: Most of the reference books used by students are not available at the library

4
Students having trouble to find certain references books especially new edition of
references books. Not all the references books are available in the library. Usually, lecturer
will ask students to buy the reference books to use during class session. From the survey that
had conducted, it is about 56% of students strongly agree, 28% is agree, 10% is neutral, 4% is
disagree and 2% is strongly disagree. More than half of students acknowledge that most of
the reference books used by student are not available at the library. Because of   to many
courses offered in library may not be able provide all reference books for all the students. If
that so, students needed to find anothers alternatives to find educational materials

Based on the problem identified from the survey, it is can be conclude that students
feel burden of to find reference books to assist their study. Most of reference books cost quite
expensive. Not all the students afford to buy the new reference books. Apart of that, not all
reference books are available at library and will be hard for students to find the information
needed especially for their assignments.

5.0 Solutions

5
To solve the problems such as new books is expensive and most of the reference
books used by students are not available at the library, a few solutions were analysed based
on the survey conducted. Pre-loved books can be the solution to the problem on higher price
of new books because pre-loved book is a used book. The price of pre-loved books available
at less than half the price of a new books. Based on the questionnaire, the highest percentage
of respondents about 54% strongly agree that pre-loved books are cheaper than new books,
34% agree, 8% neutral, 2% disagree, and 2% strongly disagree. Thus, we can observe that
more than half of the respondent state that new books is expensive.

Besides, by buying the pre-loved books, the problem of new books is expensive can
be overcome. This is because, pre-loved books will help to save the budget. As a student,
budget is one of the problem occurs among them. Therefore, as we can see on the
questionnaire, half of the respondent state that strongly agree the pre-loved books will help to
save the budget. However, there are 4% of respondent state that strongly disagree the pre-
loved books will help to save the budget. Another 6% and 40% of the respondent were voted
for neutral and agree that pre-loved books will help to save the budget respectively. Thus, not
all of the respondents agree that budget can be save by buying the pre-loved books.

Based on the survey conducted, about 48% from the respondent strongly agree by
having a pre-loved books booth can help students get the reference books easily. While, 38%
from the respondent agree and only 10% neutral. The highest percentage may be due to the
difficulties of the students to find the reference books at the library. The lowest percentage
(both about 2%) voted on disagree and strongly disagree, clearly shows that the students is
very hard to find the reference books at the library. Therefore, the pre-loved books booth play
an important role in making the way to find the reference books become easier as ABC.

Another solution is by having a pre-loved books programme. This programme is the

easiest way to recycle the used books. As much as 44% from the respondent strongly agree to
have this programme. Another response to this programme are 38% agree, 12% neutral and
only 6% disagree. This solution also shows that the respondent voted for strongly agree was
still the highest.

6
The problem occurs also can be overcome by selling the old books to pre-loved books
programme that will help students to save their room space. It is a normal situation if the
students do not have a sufficient space to save their books. This is because, the students need
a new reference books every semester. Based on the data collected, more than half (56%) of
the respondent responded to strongly agree that by selling the old books to pre-loved books
programme will help students to save their room space. There are 30% of respondent agree,
10% neutral, and 4% disagree to that solution.

6.0 Benefits

Books play a huge role in shaping a person's mentality and developing ethics. They
show us direction and give us an objective to achieve our dreams and do something great for
the society, family, and ourselves. The attraction for books depends largely on its price. There
can be a very attractive book that we had desired to read, but when we see its price tag at the
book store, all our dreams are destroyed. This happens to each one of us at least once in a life
time. Expensive books squeeze and block our interest to buy them. Majority of times, the pre-
loved books are available at less than half the price of a new books. It is not only the
monetary benefits but also the environmental advantages that makes the use of pre-loved
books significant.

There are benefits on students based on the solutions achieved. One of the benefits is
pocket friendly. If the students purchase the pre-loved books, they easily save more than half
the money than purchased a completely new one. In addition, there is no point in spending
huge amounts of money on a book that would be of no use after studying for one complete
semester. The money that they can save by buying the pre-loved books can be spend on
others necessity such as foods and drinks.

7
Besides, give and take policy is also the benefit that can take from the solution
achieved. Second hand books also offer the students a chance to earn money by selling it to
pre-loved books booth. Then, second hand book will later sell to a student at half of the
original price. By buying a pre-loved book also can offload the burden of high tuition fees
from a student's shoulders. Then, can brings down stress level among students to a great
level. The money saved from buying new books can be used in other productive activities.

Other than that, the solution achieved can resulted to environment friendly. Everyone
aware that the fact of new books are made from paper, which is produced from the pulp of a
tree. Therefore, there are awareness among people of the need to protect our mother Earth
from excessive accumulation of trash and debris. Recycle books help a great deal in
preserving earth's natural resources. Recycle books also can reduce the amount of landfill
waste because there is no need to cut of trees for this purpose.

9.0 Conclusion

13
Based on research done by spreading the questionnaire, the pre-loved books is a good
activity that can be taken in Campus. This is because when the end of semester , the
references book, photocopy of the references books are not manage properly among the
student. Furthermore, through this questionnaire it was also discovered that the most
problem among the student in Campus because of the new books are expensive with 52% are
strongly agree with that, while the second problem is most of the references books used by
students are not available at the library with 56% are strongly agree with that.

Therefore, based on our survey, the best way to overcome those problems which is the
problem of new books are expensive and the references books used by students are not
available at the library is using the pre-loved books. This is because the price of the pre-loved
books that are available is half of the price of a new books. From that it will also save the
budget of the student instead of buying the references books that are more costing than pre-
loved books.

Through the survey, the second problem is most of the references books that used for
student are not available at the library because of the library in is based on the digital E-books
and having a limited scanned books. Apart from that problem, the suggested are given which
is through the programme of pre-loved books. This programme is the easiest way to recycle
the used of the books. Through this program, to make it easier for student to get pre-loved
books, one platform which is open the booth in end of semester and first semester will give
students chance to select their books.

Lastly, the collaboration of o support the Pre-loved books are needed in order to give
the pleasures for student because of student are not affordable to buy the new books with the
PTPTN loan. From that, the estimated cost had been calculated where RM 715.00 is needed
to get the booth and suggested improvements to be done. Pre-loved books program should be
held in the because of the new references books are expensive, furthermore it can also reduce
the amount of rubbish and also to make the environment free from pollution.
