COURSE SYLLABUS, MATH 301, QUANTITATIVE METHODSc

Prerequisite: Math 202 with a grade of C or better. If you have not completed
this prerequisite, you must drop this class immediately and register for Math 202. c

Text and Materials: Quantitative Methods for Business 11th Edition, by

Anderson, Sweeny and Williams, South-Western College Publishing. Ownership of a
scientific calculator, such as a Texas Instruments TI-30 XS, is required for this
class. I will show students how to use this model calculator to solve certain
problems. c

We will also be making extensive use of the material which accompanies the text
such as the class notes and power points which are part of each lesson.c

Course Outline: We will be covering the mathematical tools of probability

(Chapters 2 and 3) and others to study methods of making management decisions
using mathematics. These will include decision analysis (Chapters 4 and 5), linear
programming (Chapter 7, 8, 9 and 10), forecasting (Chapter 6), revenue, cost and
profit analysis (Chapter 1) and Project Scheduling (Chapter 13).c

Course Objectives: At the completion of this course, the student will be able to:c

a) Make managerial decisions through the use of models taught in this class.c

b) Develop an understanding of the decision making by analyzing a variety of case

studies.c

c) Establish meaningful techniques for solving deterministic and probabilistic

modes. c

c Free tutoring is available Monday through Thursday in the Tutoring Center (Room
238, second floor of the main building) from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m for those who can
reach the Main Campus in Louisville. I will be available from 12 noon until 2 p.m.
Monday and Tuesday and 3 until 5:30 Wednesday and Thursday.c

READING THE ANNOUNCEMENT IS MANDITORY FOR THE COURSE and you will be
expected to read it. All important reminders will be posted in the announcement
and I will assume that it has been read when I post assignments or make
adjustments in the course schedule among other things. The announcement may
change it more than once a week, so make sure you read it every time you log on
the course.
Graded Work:

All graded work will include problems which require showing the steps
you used to attain the solution. Unless I specifically say so, all steps
needed to solve a problem must be shown to receive credit. In almost
every case, writing down the answer to a problem from the back of the
text without sufficient work will result in you receiving no credit for the
problem. You are encouraged to collaborate with others in the class on
all assignments, however, unless I allow it, you must submit your own
work. Failure to do so is considered cheating and will result in a score of
0 for the assignment and other penalties.

It is the policy of this class that extra credit not be offered. Therefore,
all requests for extra credit will be turned down.

It is the policy of this class that no retakes of exams and assignments be

allowed in Mathematics courses.

HOMEWORK: Homework will consist of problems from the text and will assigned
every week new material is covered. These problems will form the basis of all
testing and several of them will be collected and graded. c

CASE STUDY: One case study from the textbook will be assigned this quarter which
is to be a group project. The write up must be complete and professional looking. c

MIDTERM AND FINAL EXAMS: The midterm will be posted week 6 and the final
exam week 11. The midterm will cover the material from the first half of the
quarter and the final the rest of the course. You will have approximately 6 days to
complete each of them.c

SUBMITTING ASSIGNMENTS: All assignments must be uploaded to the

lesson drop box on or before the due date given on the homework
sheet. All assignment uploads must be a single file and must be
uploaded to the drop box only. If you are going to scan an assignment
and it is hand written, make sure you write your work in black ink and
scan it in black and white. You must look at your work before you
submit it. Make sure the writing is neat and the file readable. If I
cannot read your submission, I will not grade it and you will receive a
grade of 0 for the assignment. Late work will not be accepted for any
reason. All late assignments and assignments submitted to my email or
any site other than the appropriate lesson drop box will receive a
grade of 0. c
