1. Rather than giving Mrs. Noe suggestions to get her outside, what might be a better plan? If she doesn’t want to go outside, make a plan B instead. If she doesn’t want to go outside, she should stick with her treatment plan, like taking medications prescribed by her doctor. Instruct her not to avoid the situations she feared. Encourage her to learn on how to stay calm with the things that triggers her. She must know how to take care of herself, pick up and lift up herself. One of the effective things too is that, she should join a support group because I know this would help a lot especially with her condition. 2. How is Mr. Noe’s behavior affecting Mrs. Noe’s agoraphobia? What does the nurse need to explain and to recommend to Mr. Noe about his response to her behavior? Mr. Noe’s tolerate her wife, now she’s suffering from agoraphobia, which turns he himself don’t know what to do anymore with her wife, on how he handles her wife’s condition. As a nurse, I would further explain to him that because of the things he tolerates about her wife for the past 13 years now she’s used to it, to the point that she’s afraid to leave the house. I would probably instruct to him, to deal with his wife, he should learn how to cope up with the condition of her wife then practice patience, tell him not to invalidate the feelings of her wife, and as a husband to her he should be her support system, lastly seek help from a practitioner that would help them to treat her. 3. What other treatments are available for Mrs. Noe? The treatments available for Mrs. Noe’s condition usually includes both psychotherapy and medication. It may take some time, but treatment can help you get better. Critical Thinking Questions 1. Because all people occasionally have anxiety, it is important for nurses to be aware of their own coping mechanisms. Do a self-assessment: What causes you anxiety? What physical, emotional, and cognitive responses occur when you are anxious? What coping mechanisms do you use? Are they healthy? As a student nurse, we should know that people suffer from anxiety naturally and occasionally from different reasons. It’s important for us to know and to be aware how to manage and cope up with our own mechanisms, try to assess yourself then if you feel like you need help, that’s the time for you to seek medical attention. For me, what causes me anxiety is that the challenges that life throws at me; of course, about academic problems; also, the uncertainty I have to deal with myself and so on. Every time I’m anxious, I suffer from panic attacks and breakdowns also with my ghosting phase especially with the people around me to the point that I don’t usually respond with them. The coping mechanics that I usually do is that the “me time” for myself, to meditate and to breathe everything, music therapy also it helps me a lot. For me, these coping mechanisms are healthy for me, they helped me a lot to be brave enough with an anxious heart that I have to deal with my everyday living. 2. Some clients take benzodiazepine anxiolytics for months or even years even though these medications are designed for short-term use. Why does this happen? What, if anything, should be done for these clients? How would you approach the situation? Benzodiazepine Anxiolytics is a well-known drug for anti-anxiety, by taking this, this will help you to reduce anxiety and make it easier for you to sleep. But this medication is recommended for short-term or occasional use only because this is potential for abuse and can be addictive. Though some people continue to use this for longer, either months or years. Because they find this drug helpful and have agreed with their prescribing physician that the benefits of continuing to use them outweigh the risks. On the other hand, they use benzodiazepines over a longer term because the prescribing doctor has not re-examined their continued use. In this instance, you should ask or consult another doctor to review your prescription.
