Disneyland Disneyland celebrated its 50 birthday on Sunday. Thousands of fans and celebrities gathered at what Disney calls the “happiest place on Earth” for a giant party. Walt Disney opened thi world’s first large-scale theme park on July 17, 1955. It started a whole new world of fantasy ind family fun. An amazing 515 million fun seekers have visited Disneyland since then. Walt Disney's idea has been copied around the world by thousands of others, all wanting to make | } money from the riches in this industry. ! The concept for Disneyland began when Walt Disney was visiting Griffith Park in Los Angele with his daughters Diane and Sharon in the 1930s and 1940s. While watching them ride th ‘merry-go-round, he came up with the idea of a place where adults and their children could : go and have fun together. He initially envisioned building a tourist attraction adjacent to his | studios in Burbank to entertain fans who wished to visit; however, he soon realized that th { proposed site was too small. After hiring a consultant to help determine an appropriate site for his project, Walt bought a 160-acre site near Anaheim in 1953. Construction began in 195: ind the park was unveiled during a special televised press event on July 17, 1955. From its small beginnings, Disney has grown into a global entertainment empire. It has become one of the most famous and well known brands in history. It has created everything from movies t hildren's stationery. Theme parks have spread across the world in Paris, Japan and very soo Hong Kong, It is almost impossible to walk around any city and not see Mickey Mouse in somé hhape or form. However, while the idea of providing pleasure has not changed, park admissior rices have: the one-dollar ticket in 1955 is now $56. Disneyland has eight themed areas or “lands” that host various shops, restaurants, liv nntertainment, and attractions. A ninth area (albeit defunct) is Holidayland, a picnic ground : i which operated between 1957 and 1961 and is often referred to as the “lost” land of Disneyland. in addition to the attractions, Disneyland provides live entertainment throughout the park. Every year in October, Disneyland has a Halloween promotion when parts of the par! re decorated in a Halloween theme.
