Q.1 Society shapes and colors language. Elaborate the preceding statement given in
your textbook with appropriate examples. (15)

Q.2 What is difference between linguistic and non-linguistic communication? Is one


possible without the other? (15)

Q.3 How are language communities established? Is the criteria fixed or fluid? What
influences them to change? (15)

Q.4 Culture has influence upon the use of language. Do you agree? Provide examples
to back your claim. (15)

Q.5 Areas of language use are called language domains. Elaborate of any one language
domain in detail with appropriate examples. (15)

ASSIGNMENT No. 2
Assignment No 2 is based on research-oriented activity. You are required to carry out the
research and prepare a brief report on your findings in any one of the areas given below.
You will submit the report to the tutor within the scheduled period, present the same in
the course/assignment presentation workshop (the schedule of the course/assignment
presentation workshop will be intimated by the tutor concerned or the Regional Office).
The compulsory presentation carries 100 marks; 40 marks for the written report
assignment and 60 for the presentation.

Select any one of the following topics for research.

1. Investigate the manner of greetings of students in a Pakistani school. Select a


language class of Matric level and record the interaction between the teacher and
students and among students. Identify what kind of words are being used for
greeting. Are they similar or different from each other? Provide tables to note the
words used. Finally, provide discussion and conclusion.

2. Analyze language used by both male and female in the Pakistani social context.
Select at least 5 males and 5 females and record their interaction with their family
members on a similar topic. The researcher can be a part of that conversation and
keep it focused. This will allow you to note the type of language used by both
genders e.g. nouns, adjectives, questions, apologies, complaints etc. Finally,
provide a comparative analysis of your findings.

Note: Please take help from libraries, internet and books while writing your project
report.
