Heat Transfer Assignment Problems Set #4 - Sec. 2 – June 9th, 2021

Q 1. The glass wall of a perfectly spherical incandescent light bulb has a thermal conductivity of ks. Suppose
you are required to design a method to determine the thermal conductivity of insulating materials for the
bulb with the inner and outer radii of the sphere are ri and ro, respectively. You decide to perform the testing
under steady-state conditions with the inner surface of the glass maintained at Ts. In a particular test, a
spherical shell of insulation is cast on the outer surface of the bulb to a thickness of L. The insulated light
bulb is in a room maintained at uniform temperature and the convection coefficient at the outer surface of
the insulation is h, W/m2.K. If the energy dissipated by the light bulb is 𝑄̇, determine the equation describing
the thermal conductivity of the insulation? Discuss how you would approach the problem if the temperatures
were not maintained uniform. Would your assumptions change? If so, how?

Q 2. Consider a scenario in which you are melting a metal in an oven that reached steady state. The oven
wall consists of three materials, two of which have a thermal conductivity, kX and kZ, and thickness, LX and
LZ. The third material, Y, is sandwiched between materials X and Z, is of thickness, LY. The outer surface
temperature is To, inner surface temperature is Ti and air inside the oven is at 𝑇!,# . The inside convection
coefficient is known to be h, W/m2K. If the contact area is Ac, determine an expression for the value of kB?
