Do you want to KNOW
know?
CAPTION
Caption is brief text over or under a picture in a book, magazine, or newspaper that
describes the picture or explains what the people in it are doing or saying. A caption, also known
as a cutline, is the text that appears below an image. Most captions draw attentions to something
in the image that is not obvious, such as its relevance to the text. Captions can consist of a few
words of description, or several sentences. Along with the title, the lad, and section headings,
captions are the most commonly read words in an article, so they should be succinct and
informative.
Captions also include a short title or heading of an article in a magazine or newspaper.
Words shown on a cinema or television screen to establish the scene of a story are also called
captions. There are several criteria for a good caption. A good caption clearly identifies the subject
of the picture without detailing the obvious. It is brief, establishes the picture’s relevance to the
article, provides context for the picture, and draws the reader into the article.
People look at the photo and then read the caption to understand the context behind it. Steps
to write good caption:
1. Gather information about the photo/video: This involves collecting data about the photo
like where, when and why the photo was captured.
2. Write the perfect caption!
30 MGMP BIG KABUPATEN TUBAN – 3rd GRADE
Based on step 1, you may have figured out what to write. Just write it down and try to
express it as a mini-story. Then check necessary grammar and spelling mistakes. Yes! Good

E. Reported Speech
Reported Statements
When do we use reported speech? Sometimes someone says a sentence, for example
"I'm going to the cinema tonight". Later, maybe we want to tell someone else what the first
person said.
We use a 'reporting verb' like 'say' or 'tell'..) If this verb is in the present tense, it's
easy. We just put 'she says' and then the sentence:
 Direct speech: I like ice cream.
 Reported speech: She says (that) she likes ice cream.
We don't need to change the tense, though probably we do need to change the 'person'
from 'I' to 'she', for example. We also may need to change words like 'my' and 'your'.
But, if the reporting verb is in the past tense, then usually we change the tenses in the
reported speech:
 Direct speech: I like ice cream.
 Reported speech: She said (that) she liked ice cream.

Tense Direct Speech Reported Speech

present simple I like ice cream She said (that) she liked ice cream.

present
I am living in London She said (that) she was living in London.
continuous

She said (that) she had bought a car OR She said (that)
past simple I bought a car
she bought a car.

past I was walking along

continuous the street

present perfect I haven't seen Julie She said (that) she hadn't seen Julie.

past perfect* She said (that) she had taken English lessons before.
lessons before

Will I'll see you later She said (that) she would see me later.

would* I would help, but..” She said (that) she would help but...

I can speak perfect

Can She said (that) she could speak perfect English.
English

I could swim when I

could* She said (that) she could swim when she was four.
was four

Shall I shall come later She said (that) she would come later.

mother

might* I might be late She said (that) she might be late

I must study at the She said (that) she must study at the weekend OR She
Must
weekend said she had to study at the weekend
* doesn't change.

Occasionally, we don't need to change the present tense into the past if the information in
direct speech is still true (but this is only for things which are general facts, and even then
usually we like to change the tense):

 Direct speech: The sky is blue.

 Reported speech: She said (that) the sky is/was blue.

F. Reported Questions
So now you have no problem with making reported speech from positive and negative
sentences. But how about questions?

Direct speech: Where do you live?

How can we make the reported speech here?

In fact, it's not so different from reported statements. The tense changes are the same,
and we keep the question word. The very important thing though is that, once we tell the
question to someone else, it isn't a question any more. So we need to change the grammar to
a normal positive sentence. A bit confusing? Maybe this example will help:

Direct speech: Where do you live?

Reported speech: She asked me where I lived.

Do you see how I made it? The direct question is in the present simple tense. We make a
present simple question with 'do' or 'does' so I need to take that away. Then I need to change
the verb to the past simple.

Another example:

Direct speech: Where is Julie?

Reported speech: She asked me where Julie was.

39 MGMP BIG KABUPATEN TUBAN – 3rd GRADE

The direct question is the present simple of 'be'. We make the question form of the
present simple of be by inverting (changing the position of) the subject and verb. So, we need
to change them back before putting the verb into the past simple.

Here are some more examples:

Direct Question Reported Question

Where is the Post Office, please? She asked me where the Post Office was.

What are you doing? She asked me what I was doing.

Who was that fantastic man? She asked me who that fantastic man had been.

So much for 'why' questions. But, what if you need to report a 'yes / no' question? We don't
have any question words to help us. Instead, we use 'if':

Direct speech: Do you like chocolate?

Reported speech: She asked me if I liked chocolate.

No problem? Here are a few more examples:

Direct Question Reported Question

Do you love me? He asked me if I loved him.

Have you ever been to Mexico? She asked me if I had ever been to Mexico.

Are you living here? She asked me if I was living here.

G. Reported Requests
There's more! What if someone asks you to do something (in a polite way)?
For example:
Direct speech: Close the window, please
Or: Could you close the window please?
Or: Would you mind closing the window please?

All of these requests mean the same thing, so we don't need to report every word when we
tell another person about it. We simply use 'ask me + to + infinitive':

Reported speech: She asked me to close the window.

40 MGMP BIG KABUPATEN TUBAN – 3rd GRADE

Here are a few more examples:

Direct Request Reported Request

Please help me. She asked me to help her.

Please don't smoke. She asked me not to smoke.

Could you bring my book tonight? She asked me to bring her book that night.

Could you pass the milk, please? She asked me to pass the milk.

Would you mind coming early tomorrow? She asked me to come early the next day.

To report a negative request, use 'not':

Direct speech: Please don't be late.

Reported speech: She asked us not to be late.

H. Reported Orders
And finally, how about if someone doesn't ask so politely? We can call this an 'order' in
English, when someone tells you very directly to do something.
For example:
Direct speech: Sit down!
In fact, we make this into reported speech in the same way as a request. We just use 'tell'
instead of 'ask':
Reported speech: She told me to sit down.

Direct Order Reported Order

Go to bed! He told the child to go to bed.

Don't worry! He told her not to worry.

Be on time! He told me to be on time.

Don't smoke! He told us not to smoke.

I. Time Expressions with Reported Speech

Sometimes when we change direct speech into reported speech we have to change time
expressions too. We don't always have to do this, however. It depends on when we heard the
direct speech and when we say the reported speech.
For example:
It's Monday. Julie says "I'm leaving today".

41 MGMP BIG KABUPATEN TUBAN – 3rd GRADE

 If I tell someone on Monday, I say "Julie said she was leaving today".
 If I tell someone on Tuesday, I say "Julie said she was leaving yesterday".
 If I tell someone on Wednesday, I say "Julie said she was leaving on Monday".
 If I tell someone a month later, I say "Julie said she was leaving that day".

So, there's no easy conversion. You really have to think about when the direct speech
was said. Here's a table of some possible conversions:

Now then / at that time

Today yesterday / that day / Tuesday / the 27th of June
yesterday the day before yesterday / the day before / Wednesday / the 5th of December
last night the night before, Thursday night
last week the week before / the previous week
tomorrow today / the next day / the following day / Friday

According to the spokesman, what caused Moh. Taufiq Ali killed could be
misunderstanding between two different gangs. “It was highly possible that the attackers mistook

“An Alliance Could Answer The Growing Threat from Google and Facebook”

Apple, which has stumbled in its efforts to get into social media, has talked with Twitter in recent
months about making a strategic investment in it, according to people briefed on the matter.

Although apple has been hugely successful in selling phones and tablets, it has little traction in
social networking, which has become a major engine of activity on the Web and on mobile
devices. Social media are increasingly influencing the ways people spend their time and money —
important consideration for Apple, which also sells application, games, music and movies.

Apple has considered an investment in the hundreds of millions of dollars, one that could value
Twitter at more than $10 billion, up from an $8.4 billion valuation last year, these people said.
They declined to be identified because the discussions were private.

There is no guarantee that the two companies, which are not in negotiations at the moment, will
come to an agreement. But the earlier talks are a sign that they may form a
stronger partnership amid intensifying competition from companies like Google and Facebook.

Apple has not made many friends in social media. Its relationship with Facebook, for example, has
been strained since a deal to build Facebook featured into Ping, Apple's music-centric social
network, fell apart. Facebook is also aligned with Microsoft, which owns a small stake in it. And
Google, an Apple rival in the phone market, has been pushing its own social network, Google Plus.

“Brave Boy Found Alive After Two Days at Sea”

Feeling no fear, a five-year-old boy spent two days floating at sea on a mattress in a bid to
survive from the effects of the tsunami that killed thousands of people from his town and was
reunited with his family on Thursday.
He cried as he rushed to his parents, older brother and younger sister at a refugee camp in
Meulaboh, his hometown of 40,000 people in Aceh that was one of the hardest hit in Sunday’s
disaster.
Wira later calmly recounted to reporters the amazing events that brought him back to his
family, a rare tale of happiness in the devastated province on the island of Sumatra that has seen
nearly 80,000 people killed by the flooding.
Nursing only a gash to his left leg, Wira said he was playing with his brother and sister near his
home when the waters rushed through.
According to Antara news agency, Wira said he held on to various floating pieces of wood while
being swept away.
“I was not afraid because I am used to the sea.” Wira said while massaging his wounded leg.
“As I was still holding to a door, the mattress came by so I decided to climb on it. I was not
afraid, but I was cold.”
Wira said he spent two days out at sea until he was found by fisherman on the look out for
bodies off coast of Meulaboh. –AFP

neighborhoods were destroyed, while many others were seriously damaged as the tornado ripped
off their roofs. Thoirin aka Jayeng, 40, a resident whose house was leveled at the Sendang Asri
housing complex, said the winds hit about 4 p.m.
“I saw this black wind coming and becoming pointed into a funnel. It suddenly approached and
hit my house,” he said.
Tohirin’s wife, two children and mother-in law were in the kitchen at the time when the
tornado known locally as “Ulur-ulur” passed over their home, destroying the guest and bedrooms.
“It was as if the wind had lifted my home up,” Thoirin said.
The disaster also destroyed the walls of four neighboring houses.
Many other homes in the area lost their roofs and residents and neighbors had started
rebuilding on Sunday.
Tembalang district head Dayat said the tornado also damaged a small mosque and felled
power lines and about 50 trees. His office was still collecting data on the damage, he said.
Villagers said the tornado was the worst to hit the district in living memory.
Semarang Mayor Sukawi Sutarip and his wife, Sinto Sukawi, visited the scene on Sunday,
accompanied by senior officials.
“We will provide the victims with assistance immediately,” the mayoral spokesman Achyani
said.

A conditional sentence is a sentence that expresses a condition. A condition is something that can

A conditional sentence contains an independent clause and a dependent clause that almost always

the temptation to snack on foods high in fat and sugar.

occasional treat as long as you stay within your daily calorie allowance.

To avoid temptation, do not stock junk food – such as chocolate, biscuits, crisps and sweet
fizzy drinks – at home. Instead, opt for healthy snacks, such as fruit, unsalted rice cakes, oat

drinking too much can easily contribute to weight gain.

Do you want to know ?

There are some reasons why many people use songs to learn English. First, song are authentic
materials. If we want to learn English, we should listen to English songs. Second, English songs also
contain culture and history.

The reason is that song contain repetitions and repetitions enhance learning. The next reason is
it’s a good way to learn voccabulary and pronunciation. An last, English songs are fun and they can
easily energize the listeners.

1. DEFINITION OF SONG
Song has been an amusing companion for human beings for as long as or even longer
than we can speak. Songs are highly expressive. Some convey love and emotions; some tell a

121 MGMP BIG KABUPATEN TUBAN – 3rd GRADE

memorable and moving story; some embody one’s dreams and ideals; and some reminisce
about the golden past. Songs are abundant in themes and expressions which will echo in the
learner’s heart.
Song is a short poem or other set of words set to music or meant to be sung or a single
work of music intended to be sung by the human voice with distinct and fixed pitches and
patterns using sound and silence and a variety of forms that often include the repetition of
sections.

2. SOCIAL FUNCTION OF SONG

The social functions of song are:

a. To entertain the listeners.

b. To teach moral value through the lyrics of the songs.
c. To provide a way of managing the relationship between our public and private
emotional life.
d. To express personal feeling and cultural values.
e. To give someone to not only share their emotions with others, but also to have an
emotional connection that just can’t be experienced in any other way.

3. GENERIC STRUCTURE OF SONG

The general structure of a song consists of verse-chorus-verse-bridge-chorus. It is better for us
to learn more about the complete structure of song.
a. Intro
The introduction establishes melodic, harmonic, and/or rhythmic related to the main body
of song.
b. Verse
It is the section of the song structure that tells the story. This is the exposition, describing
the scene or the person, or an emotion. There are usually two or three verses in a row that
have the same musical structure, the same rhyme and poetic meter, but different words.
The second verse builds on the picture painted in the first verse, etc.
c. Chorus of Refrain
A chorus is the most repeated section, so it’s the easiest remembered. A chorus is the
summary of the song’s story. All the verses have been leading up to the chorus, and is
usually the part of the song people sing along with. A chorus can come at the beginning of
the song structure; it can also start in the middle, or come at the end. In fact, some songs
don’t have choruses at all. Some people are usually confused to differentiate between
choruses and refrain. A refrain is any line that repeats in the song lyric, while a chorus is
any group of lines that repeat.
d. Break
A break is actually a brief “rest” or “pause” for the core melody within a song used to add
further dimension and excitement. It may include a quick instrumental solo or drum
interlude or it may be a brief moment of silence, or a combination of each of these
elements.

e. Bridge
This is the part of the song that shifts. It can suddenly change tempo, or volume, or
instrumentation. The bridge is the section that gives the audience time to reflect on the
story, or gives them the “climax” or conclusion of the story through verses and chorus.
Bridges can be used to give the singer a break.
f. Outro or Coda
This is the end of the road for the song. It can repeat the intro, chorus or a refrain as an
outro, or a bridge with an instrumental solo.

4. LANGUAGE FEATURES OF SONG

Song lyrics can appeal to emotions, and they should also appeal to the ear. It can be
assumed that different genres of songs will exhibit different styles of lyrics. The verse of songs
contains the details of the song: the story, the events, images, and emotions that the writer
wishes to express. Song is not always composed of simple sentence structure or grammar.
Lyrics are characterized by the use of rhythms, conversational speech, and poetic expressions.
The following are the language features of song:
a. Lyrics are written in first, second, or third person given on the specific perspective you
choose. Often time point of views change in lyrics, but only when needed.
b. They use rhyming words. Usually songs use a familiar catchy tune and rhyme. A rhyme
is a linguistic style, based on consonance or similar sound of two or more syllables or
whole words at the end of one line; rhymes are most commonly used in poetry and
songs.
c. They use alliteration. It is a stylistic device in which a number of words, having the
same first consonant sound, occur close together in a series, for example: A big bully
beats a baby boy.

Some songs use poetic devices, such as figure of speech and imagery. While songs can
paint a vivid picture since they are longer mediums, imagery can be found in just a single
sentence as well. Imagery is vivid descriptive language that appeals to one or more of the
senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste) for example: Her blue eyes were as bright as
the sun, blue as the sky, but soft as silk. A figure of speech is a word or phrase that has a
meaning something different than its literal meaning.

The following are the types of figurative language:

1. Hyperbole: Big exaggeration, usually with humor.
Example:
 He’s running faster than the wind.
 My dad will kill me when he comes home.
123 MGMP BIG KABUPATEN TUBAN – 3rd GRADE
 I’m so hungry I could eat a horse.

2. Metaphor: Comparing two things by using one kind of object or using in place of another to
suggest the likeness between them.
Example:
 Her hair was silk.
 He’s a walking encyclopedia.
 You are my sunshine.

3. Personification: Giving something human qualities

Example:
 The gentle breeze swept over the field of grass.
 The telephone ringtone cried out in the middle of the night from a late phone call.
 The stars danced playfully in the moonlit sky.

4. Simile: A figure of speech comparing two unlike things that is often introduced by like or as.
Example:
 The sun is like a yellow ball of fire in the sky.
 She’s as cold as ice.
 It was as big as an elephant.

5. Onomatopia: Naming a thing or an action by imitating the sound associated with it.
Below are a collection of onomatopoeia examples grouped by how they are used:
a. Words related to water. Often, these will start with sp- or dr-. Words ending in -le are
used to indicate a small amount of water. Onomatopoeia examples related to water:

The following song lyrics are for question number 1 to 4

I See the Light

(By Mandy Moore with Zachary Levi)

All those days watching from the windows

All those years outside looking in
All that time never even knowing
Just how blind I’ve been
Now I’m here blinking in the starlight
Now I’m here suddenly I see
Standing here it’s all so clear
I’m where I’m meant to be

And at last I see the light

And it’s like the fog has lifted
And at last I see the light
And it’s like the sky is new
And it’s warm and real and bright
And the world has somehow shifted
All at once everything looks different
Now that I see you

All those days chasing down a daydream
