The true beauty of Goa lies not just in its exotic beaches but also in its serene hinterlands.
Sanguem, is one such corner of South Goa with several tourist attractions and historical places.
The Selaulim Dam and the botanical gardens are drawing the attention of numerous travelers in
Goa.
Moreover, Sanguem has given birth to great personalities. Kishori Amonkar, one of India’s
renowned classical singers is from Kurdi, a village in Sanguem, that lies completely submerged
for over ten months and rises from the water once a year from mid-April to May or mid-June.
During the 16th century, Sanguem and the neighbouring areas were ruled by the King of Soonda.
After the Portuguese invasion Sanguem along with the adjoining areas were merged with the
Portuguese territory in 1791.The Portuguese built a military chapel dedicated to Our Lady of
Miracles in Sanguem. The entire Sanguem taluka was declared as Mission and handed over to
the Pilar Fathers for evangelization.
In the past, missionaries were sent to Sanguem. Today Sanguem has been sending its own sons
and daughters as missionaries in different parts of India. The pages that follow will give us
information about their services in different parts of India.
