MULTIPLICATION OF INTEGERS

Rules in multiplying integers:

(a) If the integers have the same signs, their product is positive.

Thus, if a and b are positive/negative integers, then

a * b = ab or – a * – b = ab

Examples: 7 * 2 = 14 − 10 * −3 = − 30

(b) If the integers have different signs their product is negative.

Thus, a * –b = – ab or – a * b = – ab

Examples: 5 * −1 = −5 −9 * 2 = − 18

DIVISION OF INTEGERS

Rules in Dividing Integers:

c) The quotient of two integers with the same signs is a positive integer.

𝑎 −𝑎 𝑎
Thus, a÷b= or –a÷ –b= =
𝑏 −𝑏 𝑏

Examples: 9 ÷ 3 = 3 (–4) ÷ (–2) = 2

d) The quotient of two integers having unlike signs is a negative integer.

𝑎 𝑎
Thus, − 𝑎÷b=− or a ÷ − 𝑏= −
𝑏 𝑏

Examples: –12 ÷ 3 = – 4 8 ÷ (–2) = – 4
