ONE COIN
TWO COINS
EXERCISE

Q1. A coin is tossed once. What is the probability of getting a head.

Ans. When a coin is tossed once, the possible outcomes are H & T.
Total number of possible outcomes = 2
The favourable outcome is H.
Number of favourable outcome = 1
∴ Required probability = P(H)
= Number of favourable outcome
Total No of Outcomes
=1

Q2. A die is thrown once. What is the probability of getting : (i) the number 4 (ii) an odd
number.

Ans. Possible outcomes are {1,2,3,4,5,6}.

Total number of possible outcomes = 6
(i) Let E be the event of getting the number 4
Favourable Outcomes ={4} = 1
∴ Required probability = P(E)
= Number of favourable outcome
Total No of Outcomes
=1
6

(ii) ) Let E be the event of getting an odd number

Favourable Outcomes ={1,3,5} = 3
∴ Required probability = P(E)
= Number of favourable outcome
Total No of Outcomes
=3
6
=1

Q3. A die is thrown once. What is the probability of getting : (i) a prime number (ii) a
number greater than 2 (iii) a number other than 2 & 5 ?

Ans. Possible outcomes are {1,2,3,4,5,6}.

Total number of possible outcomes = 6
(i) Let E be the event of getting a prime number
Favourable Outcomes ={2,3,5} = 3
∴ Required probability = P(E)
= Number of favourable outcome
Total No of Outcomes
=3
6
=1
2
(ii) Let E be the event of getting a number greater than 2.
Favourable Outcomes ={3,4,5,6} = 4
∴ Required probability = P(E)
= Number of favourable outcome
Total No of Outcomes
=4
6
=2
3
(iii) Let E be the event of getting a number other than 2 and 5.
Favourable Outcomes ={1,3,4,6} = 4
∴ Required probability = P(E)
= Number of favourable outcome
Total No of Outcomes
=4
6
=2

Q4. Two coins are tossed simultaneously. Find the probability of getting:
(i) exactly one head (ii) at least one tail
(iii) no tail (iv)at most one head
Ans. . Possible outcomes are {HH,HT,TH,TT}.
Total number of possible outcomes = 4
(i) Let E be the event of getting exactly one head
Favourable Outcomes ={HT,TH} = 2
∴ Required probability = P(E)
= Number of favourable outcome
Total No of Outcomes
=2

(ii) ) Let E be the event of getting at least one tail
Favourable Outcomes ={HT,TH,TT} = 3
∴ Required probability = P(E)
= Number of favourable outcome
Total No of Outcomes
=3

(iii) Let E be the event of getting no tail.
Favourable Outcomes ={HH} = 1
∴ Required probability = P(E)
= Number of favourable outcome
Total No of Outcomes
=1

(iv) Let E be the event of getting atmost one head

Favourable Outcomes ={HT,TH,TT} = 3
∴ Required probability = P(E)
= Number of favourable outcome
Total No of Outcomes
=3
