The case went cold because

some of the evidence was not enough for the AFIS system. They are
using new techniques that could look at evidence now that you could not have done back then.
One of the things that investigators are using now is a forensic laser and use it to photograph part
of the sunglasses. it is now widely used as the best approach for capturing fluorescent images of
fingerprints. there is another method that they tried and it is called Reflectance Transformation
Imaging. It is used to see the prints a whole lot better and get more detail from the fingerprint.
Ther last technique they used is combining laser and HDR. the stuff they were able to capture
was amazing and they were able to see the fingerprint very well. the people felt that the HDR
method met the AFIS standard. On November 6, 2014, they submitted the laser-HDR sample to
NOVARIS and on that same day, they found who the fingerprint belonged to. The person that
fingerprint belonged to was Aaron Hijjnalike Thomas, sometimes known as the East Coast
Rapist. Forensic science has come a long way and it was used to help solve this case.
