AIM OF EXPERIMENT 7

To determine the heat of formation of MgCO3.

INTRODUCTION
Enthalpy of formation is the amount of the heat needed to produce one mole of the substance
from its element in the standard state. However this cannot properly be synthesized because
when magnesium is burned in air mgNO2 f0rm.Therefore Hess’s law was formed by performing
the reaction in step and adding together the separate ( ) value to calculate total enthalpy of
formation of Mg.

MATERIAL USED.
Beaker

Conical flask

Thermometer

Magnesium ribbon

Magnesium carbonate.

PROCEDURE A
50 cm3 of 1M was measured and then putted in a 100mls beaker of conical flask

The initial temperature was determined

0.2g of magnesium ribbons in 2 above was added and the final temperature was recorded.

Procedure 1-4 was repeated more times.

PROCEDURE B
50ml of 1M and Hcl and solution was measured and then putted into 100ml beaker.

The initial temperature was determined.

10g of MgCO3 was added in (2a) above and the mixture was swirled and final temperature was
recorded.
