Firm Address

Dear Recruiter First Name,

My name is X and I studying a dual degree in Economics and Finance at University Name. Upon attending JP
Morgan’s networking breakfast in City X, I’d the pleasure of meeting JP Morgan employee 1 and JP Morgan
employee 2, who provided me a great insight into JP Morgan’s different divisions, roles and its culture. Knowing
this, I am applying for a full time analyst role in Investment Banking within the M&A group.

Completing my internship in real estate investment management at firm Z has provided me the necessary skills
& experience to work in M&A. In the real estate investment management internship, I evaluated commercial and
multi-family properties using real estate financial modelling (REFM) and comparative market analysis. This has
assisted in my ability to gain strong analytical and detail-oriented skills. Additionally, I also helped the fund
director raise $50m in capital from High-Net-Worth Individuals for a new real estate fund. This enabled me to
develop strong client-servicing and communication skills. I hope to use these experiences and skills be a valuable
asset within the M&A team at JP Morgan in city X.

Working at JP Morgan would enable me to interact with the financial industry and stimulating projects as well as
work with the industry’s most diligent people and prolific clients. Your culture of the 4 principles - client service,
operational excellence, fairness & responsibility, and winning culture - portrays the ideal working environment
that encouraged me to apply there. Additionally, I am impressed with JP Morgan’s presence on campus to actively
seek young talent, which provides me the fortunate belief that the environment at the firm is truly inclusive. I
believe from my professional achievements, I’m a strong fit for JP Morgan’s analyst role in M&A investment
banking. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter.

Sincerely,

Commentary Analysis: Done Above. This was a client’s cover letter for JP Morgan.
Grammar The grammar used is punctual throughout and the style of language is excellent
Structure Structure used is top down communication (I preach this a lot as you may have noticed)

1st section is an introduction of how candidate first engaged with JP Morgan at a

networking breakfast event and was exposed to the opportunities at the firm.

2nd section is professional experiences. The candidate had a strong real estate
investment internship so we decided to focus on that only, followed by stating some of
the tasks carried out and the achievements/results yielded.

3rd section includes as similar to the other cover letters, the ‘why JP Morgan’ element.
We researched the culture and provided additional research into JP Morgan’s campus
presence (wasn’t a lot of effort but an obvious indicator that them being active in
campus provides a good indication of top graduate destination)
Formatting 1 page, neat font, optimal font size was used at 12, body of cover letter is about half a
page, and this is ideal.
Relevance to Job I believe highlighting key skills such as analytical, detail-oriented and client-servicing
Description skills really matches up to the requirements of JP Morgan’s M&A internship as per their
requirements. The real estate internship isn’t industry-relevant but it is highly skill-
relevant due to financial modelling and presentation skills.

Level of Candidate was in a good position as they had attended networking events to provide
Personalization to something personable to relate back to JP Morgan so we used this to their benefit.
the firm
Motivation and This was difficult to portray compared to the traditional banking internships because
Passion the industry was not too relevant so we focused on portraying the candidate as
someone with the relevant skills who wanted to apply for investment banking, but at a
firm they were very interested in.
Research Additional research was done on JP Morgan’s culture but that was it, perhaps further
research on blogs, social impact projects or awards could have been stated but
something different is needed for every application so we focused on JP Morgan’s
(very) active presence on campus as a welcoming environment for students.
Overall Strength Very good – We believe we crafted the candidate’s cover letter effectively given their
experiences. Ultimately, this did land them an interview soooo…
