SAVE MERIT SAVE NATION

HOW THIS SMSN MOVEMENT HAS STARTED

For Centuries a particular class of the Indian society and the females were not having the easy approach
for the opportunities to grow. So in the 19th Century, in spite of the colonial rule, some kingdoms & the
then Governments have started offering the Sops for the growth. These were in the form of
Reservations in the employment and education.

The females were around 48% of the total population and if categorized on the sex (gender) basis
and on the basis of caste if categorized the deprived were around 30%.

At the time of independence India as a whole was a very backward country academically, financially and
socially. The per capita income of India was very less After Independence, the Gov of India has given the
reservation mainly on the basis of Caste and not on the basis of gender, for 10 years initially. Due to this
around 28% of the population was eligible for the various kind of reservation in education and
employment. In spite of this reservation the societies of India were of the opinion that the reservation
percentage needs to be increased to bring the major part of the society to the main stream.

Because of all this the Government of India was further convinced that the period of the existing
reservation system and the percentage to cover larger part of the society needs to be increased. This
was the easiest approach the GOI used to pull the society. Thus by the end of the year 2019 the
reservation percentage reached to approximately 80%.

Because of this the society was divided in to two classes the reserved category and the unreserved
category.

The contribution and the sacrifices from the open category of the society for the upliftment of the
deprived became unbearable. This has started the feeling of exploitation in the mind of the Open
category people as after becoming eligible for the higher education & employment they were not
getting the opportunities and gap for the eligibility amongst the open & reserved has increased.

During this period of approximately 70 years the urbanization, GDP & the per capita income has
increased manifolds. This lead to the competition.
People especially the young generation has started feeling that the caste wise reservation is irrelevant
& irrational. Also this has developed the feeling in the minds of people that the real growth of the nation
will hamper if we don’t promote the merit.

The SMSN movement has started mainly because of all these factors and the years of anger and outrage
in the minds of qualified who could not secure admissions in the professional institutions in spite of
scoring good marks. In the year 2019 formally people have got united and started the “’Save Merit Save
