𝙽𝚊𝚛𝚛𝚊𝚝𝚒𝚟𝚎 𝚙𝚘𝚎𝚖:-
There is nothing extraordinary in the form of The Cold Within. It's a simple narrative poem with
eight quatrains and a rhyme scheme of abcb.

sᴛᴀɴᴢᴀ 𝟷:-
Six humans trapped by happenstance
In bleak and bitter cold.
Each one possessed a stick of wood
Or so the story’s told.

Kinney’s poem The Cold Within is rich in its use of poetic devices, or figures
of speech for that matter.

Q1) What does happenstance mean?

Ans:- Happenstance means an event that might have been arranged although it is
accidental.

Q2) Explain the symbolism used by the poet.

Ans:-
● The poet uses symbolism to show that it was the coldness of their hearts
which extinguished the fire of life.
● Fire, which symbolized hope and acceptance, might have saved the ,
characters but they refused to shun their prejudices and let it die thus sealing
their wn doom.

Q3) Which figure of speech is used in the line ‘In bleak and bitter cold’?

Ans:- Alliteration, close repetition of consonant sound.

sᴛᴀɴᴢᴀ:- 𝟸
Their dying fire in need of logs,
But the first one held hers back,
For, of the faces round the fire,
She noticed one was black.

Q4) What is the symbolic significance of the phrase ‘dying fire’?

Ans:-
● The word ‘fire’ basically symbolises the basic spirit of humanity and harmony
underlying the social-cultural milieus of existence.

● The adjective ‘dying’ may be interpreted as the poor state of social

relationships, due to the prevalence of negative values and feelings.

Q6) Who is sitting across the white lady?

Ans:- A black-skinned person is sitting across the white lady.

Q7) Which sin is hinted at in these lines?

Ans: The sin of racial discrimination is hinted at. The first man does not give his stick
because he does not want to save a black mart.

Q8) How did the first human react?

Ans:- The first human was a white lady. She was racist. She wasn’t ready to
sacrifice her log into the extinguishing fire as she noticed that one among her fellow
beings was black. She was too stubborn and adamant enough not to save the life of
a black.

STANZA :- 3

Saw one not of his church,
And couldn’t bring himself to give
The fire his stick of birch.

𝚜𝚘𝚖𝚎𝚝𝚑𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚌𝚕𝚘𝚜𝚎𝚕𝚢 𝚊𝚜𝚜𝚘𝚌𝚒𝚊𝚝𝚎𝚍 𝚝𝚘 𝚒𝚝.

Q8) Why do you think the second one declined his stick?

Ans:- The second human too declined his stick into the fire because as he
was looking across, he found one among his group doesn’t practice the faith
he does. So, it was difficult for him to save a man who doesn’t belong to his
church.

🔥
Q9)Based on your reading, briefly describe the character of the man referred
to as ‘the next man’ in this stanza.

Ans:-
● The ‘next man’ in this stanza is bigoted and biased despite being religious.

● As his attitude suggests , he is not the one who follows his faith with a broad
mind and big heart.

● I nstead his attitude is that of a selfish and opportunistic character who hates
his neighbour for following a different faith. Thus, he is least concerned about
practically adopting one of the greatest of all ideals that every faith instructs its
followers to cherish, i.e. love for one’s neighbour. Moreover, his obsession
with his own ‘church’ also suggests that he is too dogmatic and orthodox in
his belief.

STANZA 4:-
The third one sat in tattered clothes.
He gave his coat a hitch.
Why should his log be put to use
To warm the idle rich?

Q10) .What do tattered clothes tell about the man?

Ans:- A man in tattered clothes refers to a poor man.

Q11)How did he react?

Ans:-
● The poor man hated rich and their idle nature.
● He was not willing to spend his hard-earned possession to save the life of a
rich man who never thinks about the poor.

Q12) How do you think the poor man should have behaved instead of showing
negativity in his attitude and behaviour as suggested in this stanza?
Ans:-.
● The poor man should have reasonably understood his own state and
accepted it as a reality without blaming the rich man.
● He must have been able to appraise and appreciate his economic condition
with fairness and without impartiality or bias.
This would have enabled him to think of the crisis with a positive frame of mind and
contribute towards it for making the situation better for all.

STANZA 5:-

The rich man just sat back and thought

Of the wealth he had in store,
And how to keep what he had earned
From the lazy, shiftless poor.

Q13)Based on this stanza, how will you define the attitude of the rich man?

Ans.:-
● T he rich man has been described here as a mean-minded, self-seeking
paranoid who is scared of the presence of the poor man.
● His perception of the poor man as ‘lazy’ and ‘shiftless’, captured in the last
line, shows that he is conceited and deceitful as well.

● The rich man is greedy and has his own stereotyped perception of the poor
man that prevents him from taking initiative to make the situation better.

🔥
Q14)What, according to this stanza, prompts the rich man to sit back without
offering his log?
Ans:-.

● While the rich man is over-possessive about his wealth, he is also biased in
his opinion about the poor man.

● He feels that if the poor man survives, he may make off with all he owns. It’s
his desire not to let the poor man survive that prompts him to sit back and
make no effort to offer the log he holds.

STANZA 6:-

The black man’s face bespoke revenge

As the fire passed from his sight.
For all he saw in his stick of wood
Was a chance to spite the white.

Q15)According to this stanza, what is the motive behind the black man’s
refusal to offer his stick of wood?
Who is the target of his prejudice?

Ans:-
● T he stanza reveals that the motive behind the black man’s refusal to offer his
stick of wood is retaliation or revenge.
● The black man thinks it as a chance to take revenge and harm the white man
who is the target of his prejudice, by keeping the log to himself.

Q16)What does the ‘stick of wood’ held by the black man symbolise in his own
context?

Ans:
● ‘ The stick of wood’ that the black man holds is apparently a kind of life-line on
which his survival depends.
● As the black man is obsessed with the idea of not letting the white man have
his share in the fire, he refuses to offer his stick of wood. Thus, to the black
man, his stick of wood symbolises an opportunity to take revenge on the white
man.

STANZA 7:-

The last man of this forlorn group

Did nought except for gain.
Giving only to those who gave
Was how he played the game.

Metaphor:-a word or phrase that is used in an imaginative way to show that
somebody/something has the same qualities as another thing.

Q17)What type of mindset aptly defines the behavior of the ‘last man’?
Ans:-
● It can be regarded as a grossly materialistic mindset devoid of generosity for
fellow humans or philanthropy.
● A greedy fellow who would give help only if there is something beneficial in
return i.e., he doesn’t want to lose his possession without being in a profitable
state.

STANZA 8:-

Their logs held tight in death’s still hands

They didn’t die from the cold without
They died from the cold within.

Personification- The projection of characteristics which belong only to
humans onto animate animals, objects, forces of nature and delites.

Q18) What is the phrase ‘human sin’ used here for?

Ans:-
● This phrase basically suggests their gross insensitivity and hostility towards
one another.
● What is inhuman about their tragic death is their refusal to sacrifice their egos
and prejudices, ignoring the fact they might have survived if they had agreed
to cooperate.

● It speaks about their inner weakness, which is tantamount to impiety and

wickedness.

Q19)What do the phrases ‘cold without’ and ‘cold within’ suggest here?

Ans:-
● T he first phrase, ‘cold without’ has a plain meaning, signifying the inclement
climatic condition in which the six men are trapped.

● The second phrase, ‘cold within’

has a deep, connotative meaning, implying their insensitive prejudices and
inhuman behavior which cost their lives.

Q20)State how the following theme is connected with the theme of the poem:

Ans:- Their dying fire in need of logs

Literally, it refers to the fire that is dying and needs to be kept alive with the
use of a log.

● Metaphorically, it can be understood as the fire of compassion in their

hearts that is dying. To keep it burning what they need is a log of wood,
but they do not use it. Thus, by the end, each one of them dies from ‘the
cold within’.
