Reported Speech (Indirekte Rede)

Examples:

Lennart is blinded by the sun.

Lennart tells Paul


that he is blinded by the sun.

Lennart told Paul


that he was blinded by the sun.

Gina hasn't seen Mia for a week.

Gina tells Sahra


that she hasn't seen Mia for a week.

Gina told Sahra


that she hadn't seen Mia for a week.

I will go to Canada in 2020.

George tells Rajiv


that he will go to Canada in 2020.
George told Rajiv
that he would go to Canada in 2020.

Before I visited the UK I had lived in Germany.

George says to Rajiv


that before he visited the UK he had lived in
Germany.
George said to Rajiv
that before he had visited the UK he had lived
in Germany.

Wir stellen fest:

Steht der Einleitungssatz in der Gegenwart, verändert sich die Zeit in der indirekten Rede
NICHT.

Steht der Einleitungssatz in der Vergangenheit, verändert sich die Zeit in der indirekten
Rede und rutscht eine Zeitstufe tiefer.

Dabei wird aus


Simple Present ==> Simple Past
Simple Past ==> Past Perfect
Present Perfect ==> Past Perfect
Past Perfect ==> Past Perfect
will-future ==> would
(Future I/Simple ==> Conditional I
Future)
EXTRA:

EXAMPLE of Reported Speech with Future II

I will have seen George by the end of the week.

Caroline says to Sahra


that she will have seen George by the end of
the week.

Caroline said to Sahra


that she would have seen George by the end of
the week. I

EXAMPLE of Reported Speech with Past Perfect and Conditional II

If I had known George's address, I would have written him an email.

Rajiv says to Caroline


Rajiv said to Caroline
that if he had known George's address, he would have
written him an email.

Past Perfect und Conditional II können nicht weiter „nach hinten gesetzt“ werden.

The train was really slow today.


She said that the train had been really slow that day.

There was a very strange woman in the seat next to me.


She said that here had been a very strange woman in the seat next to her.

She talked to me about her family.


She said that she/the woman had talked to her about her family.

She wanted to know everything about my family, too.


She said that she/the woman had wanted to know everything about her/Caroline's
family, too.

I'm still a bit nervous now when I think of her.


She said that she/Caroline was still a bit nervous then when she thought of her/the
woman.

I think she was crazy.


She said that she thought she/the woman had been crazy.

So you can't imagine how glad I was to see Gillian and her mum at the
station.
She said that thus/so I couldn't imagine how glad she had been to see Gillian and
her mum at the station.
