Metro Manila faces several urban planning issues that have contributed to its decline. These include overwhelming traffic due to poor transportation infrastructure planning, lack of disaster preparedness for the 360 disasters that strike the Philippines each year, and frequent flooding due to an absence of flood reduction plans and infrastructure. Current problems include lack of environmental protection resulting from uncontrolled urbanization and population growth, and a garbage crisis caused by improper waste disposal that pollutes water and land. Proposed solutions involve advocating green architecture that protects the environment while developing infrastructure, and converting waste into fuel to reduce pollution and provide an energy source for industries.

1. Based on the video clip cite at least 3 factors that contributed to the declined of Metro Manila. Explain. Traffic Transportation- One of the factors is the overwhelming traffic crisis happening here in the Metro Manila alone in the Philippines. Because of poor urban planning design Manila has. It affects the flow of people’s movement or the mixed traffic pedestrians, the loading and unloading of public transportation system, the unruly behavior of automobile driver, and the illegal roadside parking. As they are saying that the Philippines is one of the most developing country in Asia because many Filipino can afford to buy a new car. But with out proper urban planning for efficient highways, skyway, underpass or any roads for the means of transportation in land, it can affect the economic growth of the Philippines simply because of crisis in traffic people spend more time in highways because they are stuck in traffic than they should be spending in work. Disaster Preparedness- In a country, its is normal to be resilient and adapted in a certain disaster if this become normal to their environment. For example, in Tokyo Japan’s infrastructure is earthquake proof as they adapt to their environment because their land is belonging to the pacific ring of fire where in most of the earthquakes occur. In addition, Japan has Flood System Protection that they built an underground water infrastructure to decrease the flood disaster. However, in the case of the Philippines, around more than 360 disaster struck the Philippines in the past 30 years and yet the infrastructure and the urban area is not adapted to this disaster. Especially in Metro Manila, the city lacks plan and programs for risk reduction management, there are no measures in place to solve the decade long flood problems and also the city’s disaster response command center lacks equipment, the office looks shabby and neglected. Perhaps it is important to prioritizing disaster resiliency in all of Manila especially its buildings and structures as it is city is prone to hazards. Floods- Metro Manila has poor urban planning design for flood disaster reduction. Aside from the fact that the city lacks plan and programs for flood disaster, they lacks elevated walkways for people to continue to travel without affecting by the water floods. This may result to delay the economic growth of city as they call suspension of incoming classes/work due to flood disaster. 2. Cite at least 2 problems Metro Manila is facing right today not mentioned in the video clip and draw action plan to solve it. Lack of Environmental Protection- Rapid growth of urbanization and population of Metro Manila it caused to devoid of green areas. Perhaps, protecting our environment is the key to surviving through climate change. Because of economic growth, many infrastructures were built that caused to destroy the greenery area of Metro Manila. As an architecture student, I want to advocate the green architecture where in as an architect, we need to provide a protection to our environment while we come up of a design for structure. As we do this, we need to build with nature and not against it. Garbage Crisis- Many undiscipline Filipino who selfishly throw their garbage everywhere mostly in water system that cause many factors like flood, water pollution, and many other that affects the ecological environment of the city. Although, there is a massive clean up of garbage from the river and land areas, it only drives from one place to another and it may result to the increasing percentage of air pollution. Without proper planning of garbage system in Metro Manila, this may consider as “ticking bomb disaster” that may affect to the future of the Metro Manila environment. One of the solution of garbage crisis happening in Metropolitan is converting waste into fuel that can be used in industries as a source of energy.
