CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

This chapter present the methodology that the researcher used to answer the reaserch

problem. It consist of research design, research instrument, data and source data, data collection,

and data analysis.

3.1. Research Design

This reaserch is descriptive-qualitative method with a content of analysis. The researcher

will describe the research problem that can be accepted by exploring a concept or

phenomenon (Cresswell, 2009: 98). The descriptive method was used to represent findings of

the reaserch, which were the strategies that used in translating idiomatic expression. In

qualitative research there are no explicit limitations on what we can be considered data, the

researcher in a qualitative research often starts out by treating everything around a topic as a

potential data (Richard, 2005). Bogdan & Biklen (1992: 28) also added descriptive

qualitative reaserch concerns providing description of a phenomenon that happens naturally

without any intervention of an experiment or an artifically contrived treatment.

3.2. Research Instrument

In this reaserch, the researcher choose a movie with the title Captain America: The First

Avenger as the data source. This movie was chosen because it has several words that contains

idiomatic expressions. The researcher also searched the script movie. The function of script

and subtitle are to make the researcher more easy to categorize the utterence of idiomatic

expression in the movie whether it is contain idioms or not.

3.3. Data and Source Data

The data in this research was taken from the dialogue that exist idiomatic expression

movie of Captain America: The First Avenger, while the source data was taken from the

script movie and subtitle which download in Subscene.com, Subtitleseeker.ee, and

Opensubtitle.org. The researcher comparing those three website subtitle from another source.

Finally, the researcher found the translation of the movie which is download in

Subscene.com was easy to understand and looks natural. The subtitle use simple word but

conveying the message from source language well.

3.4. Data Collection

The researcher collecting the data by watching the movie, reading the script movie, and

the subtitle as well. The reaseacher categorized idiomatic expression based on the theory of

Cowie, Mackin, McCaig (1993) in Tu (2007).

3.5. Data Analaysis

The researcher did some types to analyse the data. First, the researcher classified the data

into the types of idiomatic expression based on the theory of Cowie, Mackin, McCaig (1993),

there are phrase idiom and clause idiom. After that, from the sentence that contains idiomatic

expression the researcher analyse its translation strategy from English into Bahasa Indonesia

by Mona Baker theory (1984), there are translation by using an idiom similar meaning and

form, translation by using idiom simalar meaning but different form, translation by

paraphrase, translation by omissions. Finally, the researcher explores the data which have

been classified into that four types of translation by Mona Baker. Afterwides, the researcher

makes her own interpretation to classify the data.
