“The Olympics where is where Heroes are created. The PARALYMPICS is where heroes
came”- The Rising Phoenix.

As a sports management student I have to understand and respond t to external

environmental factors that affect Paralympics event. This event is for disabled athletes. The
external environment factors affecting Paralympics is on much higher level as compared to
normal Olympics.

The factors in external environment that can be classified as Social, Demographic, Economic,
Technological, Political and Legal and competitive.

Social factors: Its about attitude, value, lifestyle. Values are formed through peer groups,
family, education. Physical disability people face a lot of challenge to prove their value in
society. Perception of physical disability somewhere gets broken by para athlete. These para
athletes compete in sports to win. The biased attitude towards disabled people and not
focussing on competencies of individuals. Para athlete competes against owns disability,
oneself and society’s stereotypes. Paralympics event in the country help in breaking barrier
for physical disabilities and treat them equally in society. Journey of Paralympics from
London to Beijing to Rio it keeps evolving.

The Paralympic brand teaches the values of acceptance and appreciation for people with a
perceived disability through the lessons and examples of the athletes and the Paralympic
Games. The Para athletes demonstrate courage and determination and they inspire all
mankind to believe that anything is possible. The Paralympic brand is a bridge which links
sport with social awareness to challenge stereotypes and ultimately leads to equality. The
goal is to further promote this message in the communications using the network of the
IPC membership in ensuring that the positive association with the brand can result in
further benefits for the Movement. (IPC website)

Demographic factors: Physical disabled man, woman and children have less access to
coaching facilities, coaches and mentors. A few para athletes get chance to get trained.
Once para athlete gets place in society due to his/her achievement in sports. It creates place
for themselves and others disabled in society. Indian para athlete Deepa Malik is living
example and has given hope to many para athletes to compete in Paralympics. Indian
contingent has won 4 medals in last Paralympics in 2016.

Paralympics goal is to empower Para athletes at all levels to enjoy the opportunity to
practice sports and to facilitate the development of competition pathways from grass
roots through to the Paralympic Games.

Economic: Paralympics keeps on evolving. After Olympics event, Paralympics take place in
the same venues. Due to development of Paralympics infrastructure, it helps in the job
creation for local people. Sponsorships for Paralympics are packed together with Olympics.
So that the revenue generated will be IPC will be fostered to sports development, people’s
empowerment. Paralympics enables para athlete to avoid secondary disabilities, skills for
daily livings, recognition and rewards.

In China, the (Paralympic) Games were really a transformation tool for changing attitudes
across the board in China towards people with disability, to building accessibility facilities
in the city, to changing laws to allow people with a disability to be part of society."

Technological Factors: Organizing Paralympics is technological challenge event. From stay of

hotel to transportation to participation in venue is technological challenge. By planning,
executing and reviewing these challenges are overcome. Paralympics can be viewed online,
on Tv and Netflix has launched documentary on Paralympics. People across the world are
getting connected and know about Paralympics. Technology has empowered para athlete to
compete.

Political legal factors: IPC has strategic partnership with bodies like UN, IOC, NGOs around
the world and cultural organizations. Paralympics implements UN convention on Rights of
persons with disability to ensure that Paralympics movement becomes an increase part of
society. There is

Competitive factors: Competition with Olympics. The viewership and followers of Olympics
are on a large scale. Paralympics is growing in terms of acceptance, stadium bookings and
followers. IPC and Olympic rights are packed together for domestic sponsorships and
broadcasting.
