Q) What is the significant role played by language in the system of curriculum

transaction? (5)

Ans:- the language is always believed to play a central role in learning. no matter
what the subject area is, students assimilate new concepts when they listen, talk,
read and write about what they are learning. Students learn through language.
therefore if the language used is weak, so is their learning. In school curriculum
transaction , we need to focus on language across the curriculum(LAC) approach,
which gives importance in teaching and learning of language within a subject, as a
result of which teacher can improve the results of the students in any subject.

In the teaching and learning of content in subject areas such as mathematics,

social science, physics and even art and music, language has significant role to
play.the are discussed below-

1) Language acts as an constituent component of higher order thinking skills

and a necessary precondition for successful content learning: there is little
doubt that successful learning in most school subjects strongly depends on
the availabity of higher order thinking skils. and higher ordr thinking skills
are developed through language .language and content are closely related.
Effective language development facilitates the learning of content subjects.
2) Language helps in cognitive development: developmental psychologist
vygotsky claimed that young children develops higher order thinking skills
through cultural mediation and interpersonal communication with more
knowledgable adults or peers, which means that development of mental
concepts and knowledge depends on social interaction and verbal exchange
by the use of language.
3) Language acts as a filter for assessing learning outcomes: formal
assessment procedures in school subjects heavily rely on oral or written
presentations by the students .if students do not have an age adequate
command over language or subject literacy, they have no chance to meet
the implicit expectations by the teacher as asubject specialist. Thus
language plays an important role in school curriculum.
Language is related to thinking: language is more than just communication
skills. It is the basis of thinking process. For the development of thinking
capabilities in proper manner, all basic purposes are completed with the
help of of language. language is a tool for conceptualising and structuring
meaning. Language helps in a great way to express the human thoughts by
oral or written mode.

Language and learning: the language skills developed during the pre school
years serves as a wonderful foundation for learning in school. children with
solid language skills often become strong readers and writers .

Language as a medium: language acts as medium for carrying the

information to the learners. Language is like a bridge between teaching and
learning. Language can transfer ones thought to another.

So language really does matter , not only min the language classroom but
across the whole curriculum
