1 The result of an ultrasound scan of a human organ is shown.
The speed of sound in the organ is 1400 ms-1. The smallest grid division on the x-axis is 1 ×
10−5 𝑠.
(a) (a) Calculate the thickness of the organ.
(b) Why is a gel of similar density to skin smeared on the ultrasound emitter as it is placed on the
skin of the person?
2 In 1990 the surface of Venus was imaged using radio waves sent by an orbiting satellite. The
images had a resolution of 100 m of vertical height.
(a) Explain how waves can be used to determine the height of the surface of the planet.
(b) What factors would improve the resolution?

6 The diagram shows microwaves arriving at a receiver R having travelled along two different
paths from the same transmitter T.
Explain whether or not these waves will be coherent. The wavelength of the microwaves is 2.9
cm. By calculating the path difference, deduce whether the receiver shown is detecting a
maximum or a minimum intensity.
7 What is meant by monochromatic? Draw a diagram of the apparatus you would use to produce a
two-slit superposition pattern for monochromatic visible light. Mark any relevant dimensions on
your diagram.

8 A Sketch the superposition pattern produced when monochromatic light illuminates a double slit.
Compare this to the pattern produced using a single slit. What is the effect of using white light?
9 A laser produces red light with a wavelength of 680 nm. Using this light, a superposition pattern
with a fringe width of 3.2 mm is produced on a screen 1.8 m from a double slit.
Calculate the slit separation of the double slit. (3.83 × 10−4 𝑚)
10 A light source of wavelength 550 nm illuminates two slits 0.25 mm apart. What will be the
fringe width on a screen 2 m from the slits? (4.4 × 10−4 𝑚)
