d) A particle vibrates with simple harmonic motion of the amplitude 0.08m and time period

2. a) Explain Carnot Cycle and calculate the efficiency of Carnot Engine. (5) [CO-1]

b) Write down the Maxwell’s equations in free space. Obtain the differential equation which
describe the propagation of plane electromagnetic wave in free space and find the velocity of
electromagnetic wave in free space. (5) [CO-2]

3. a) What is the First law of thermodynamics? Apply the first law to the following processes: (i)
Adiabatic process, (ii) cyclic process, (iii) isochoric. (5) [CO-1]

b) Define Poynting vector. Derive the expression for Poynting theorem. (5) [CO-2]

4. a) Write down the Kelvin-Planck statement of Second law of thermodynamics. Explain Entropy
and show that: (i) the entropy increases in irreversible process, (ii) change in entropy is zero
in reversible process. (5) [CO-1]

b) Define simple harmonic motion. What are characteristics of simple harmonic motion?
Derive differential equation of simple harmonic oscillator. (5) [CO-2]

A wave travelling on a string is shown by y = 0.1cos(6x + 80t + π/3). Determine (a) the wavelength,
frequency, wave velocity and maximum K.E of the wave. (4 Marks)

Q3. A) Derive a general equation of motion for SHM using Hooke’s Law and write a general function such
that it represents the general solution of equation of motion for SHM. Write the corresponding
velocity and acceleration functions. (4 Marks)

(B) State first law of thermodynamics. Show that heat input (Q) given to a system (perfect gas) for its
quasi-static expansion is equal to the change in enthalpy (H). (6 Marks)

Establish the equation of propagation of electromagnetic wave in free space and show that em wave
travels with the speed of light.
Q4. A) Prove that equation of continuity is contained in Maxwell’s Equation. (5 Marks)
OR
At normal temperature (0 °C) and pressure (1.013 × 105 N/m2), when 1 g of water freezes, its volume
increases by 0.091 cm3. Calculate the change in internal energy. [Latent Heat of water (L) = 80 cal/g]

B) Write about plane electromagnetic wave and its nature and give its graphical representation. Define
Poynting vector. (5 Marks)

1. (a) Why there is need of an extended source in case of interference by division of amplitude? (2)

(b) What should be the minimum number of lines per inch in a half inch width grating to resolve
the D1 (5890Ả)and D2(5896Ả) lines of sodium in the first order. (2)

(c) Differentiate between single mode and multimode optical fibre. (2)

(d) Differentiate between spontaneous and stimulated emission. (2)

(e) A beam of light consisting of two wave lengths 650mm and 520 mm is used to obtain interference fringes in
Young’s double slit experiment. The distance between the slits is 2 mm and between the plane of the slits and
screen is 120 cm. Find the least distance from the central maximum where the bright fringes due to both
wavelengths coincides. (2)

2. (a) Explain the formation of Newton’s rings in reflected monochromatic light. Show that the spacing between rings
goes on decreasing with increased order. (6)

(b) Two glass plates encloses a wedge shaped air film, touching at one edge and separated by a wire of 0.05mm
diameter at a distance of 0.15 m from the edge. Calculate the fringe width when light of wavelength λ= 6000Ả
from a broad source falls normally on the film. (2)

(c) Draw a labelled ray diagram depicting interference in a Fresnel’s biprism . (2)

3. (a) Describe the Fraunhofer’s diffraction at a single slit and show that the intensities of successive maxima are

(b) In a two slit diffraction pattern, the screen is 160 cm away from the slit. The slit widths are 0.08mm and they are
0.4mm apart. Calculate the wavelength of light if the fringe spacing is 0.25 cm. Also find the missing orders. (2)

(c) Explain population inversion in lasing action. (2)

4. (a) Describe the construction and working of a Nicol prism. (4)

(b) Calculate the thickness of the quarter wave plate, given μo = 1.658 and μe =1.486. The wavelength of light used
is 5890 Ả. (2)

(c) Define acceptance angle and numerical aperture of an optical fibre. (2)

(d) The velocity of light in water is 2.2 *108 m/s. Find polarising angle of incidence for water surface.

(b) What is coherence? How Fresnel’s Biprism is used to obtain two coherent sources by using sodium

(c) Why Helium is used in He-Ne Laser, explain? (2.5)
(d) If we introduce a drop of water between plane glass plate and plano-convex lens, what happens to
diameters of rings with monochromatic light? Give relation. (2.5)
Q.2 (a) Describe the formation of Newton’s rings. Prove that in reflected light, diameters of dark rings are
proportional to the square root of natural numbers. (7)
(b) Newton’s rings are observed normally in reflected light of wavelength 5893 A . The diameter of the

10th dark ring is 0.005 m. Find the radius of curvature of the lens and thickness of the air film. (3)
OR
Two coherent Source whose intensity ratio is 81:1, produce interference fringes. Deduce the ratio of
maximum to minimum intensity of the fringe system. (3)
Q.3 (a) Show that when a thin mica sheet is introduced in the path of the interfering beams, the fringe
width remains same. Also deduce the expression for the displacement of fringes. (7)
(b) Calculate the population ratio of two states in He-Ne laser that produces light of wavelength 6000 A0
at 300K. ( k = 8.6×10-5 eV/K & c = 3×108 m/s ) (3)
Q.4 (a) Explain clearly Huygens Principle for the propagation of light. (3)
(b) Discuss the phenomenon of Fraunhofer diffraction at a single slit and show that the relative intensity
of the successive maximum is nearly 1: (4/9π2): (4/25π2): 4/49π2 and so on. (7)

Derive Relationship between Einstein’s ‘A’&‘B’ coefficients. (7)

Instructions: You need to attempt any two questions out of Q. 1, 2 and 3. However,
attempt any three parts (out of a, b, c, d & e ) from each question.
Note: Draw suitable well labelled diagrams wherever necessary.

Q. 1 (a) Give schematic diagram showing interference using Fresnel Biprism. How the
interference pattern gets affected with the increase in angle of Biprism? (3+2)
(b) Show by suitable expression, Newtons rings goes on becoming narrower as the order
increases. A Biprism is placed at distance of 5 cm from slit illuminated by sodium light
of wavelength 5890 Å. Find the width of fringes observed in eyepiece at 75 cm distance
from Biprism, given the distance between virtual sources is 0.005 cm. (3+2)
(c) Differentiate between Fresnel and Fraunhofer diffraction. Calculate the minimum
number of lines in a grating which will just resolve the sodium lines in the first order
spectrum. The wavelengths are 5890 x 10-10cm and 5896 x 10-10 cm. (3+2)
(d) How can diffraction grating be used for determination of wavelength of light? (5)
(e) If a medium of refractive index µ is inserted between the lens and glass plate, how
does the diameter of a ring change?
Newtons Rings are observed with two different media between the glass surfaces. The
nth order rings have diameters as 10:7. Find the ratio of the refractive indices of two
media. (2+3)

Q. 2 (a) Mention the uses of Brewster’s Law. Two Polaroids are adjusted to obtain maximum
intensity. Through what angle should one polaroid be rotated to reduce the intensity to
¼? (2+3)
(b) With a suitable diagram, illustrate the use of fibre as a wave guide. Give the physical
significance of Numerical aperture. Calculate the numerical aperture of an optical
fibre where refractive indices of core and cladding are 1.495 and 1.485, respectively.

(c) Differentiate between step index and graded index fibres. (5)
(d) How spontaneous emission is different from stimulated emission? Enunciate the
requirements for Laser action. (2+3)
(e) Draw a well labelled energy level diagram for He-Ne laser. Discuss the roles of He
atoms and Ne atoms in He-Ne laser. (3+2)

Q. 3 (a) Differentiate between the interference pattern obtained in Fresnel biprism and
Newton’s Rings. What will happen to Newton’s rings if glass plate is silvered? (3+2)
(b) Give Lord Rayleigh criteria of resolution. Which spectra of grating will be missing if
width of opacity is thrice the width of slit? (3+2)
(c) How can a Nicol prism be used as a Polariser and analyser? (5)
(d) Differentiate between the fibres used for long distance transmission and short distance
Transmission. (5)
(e) Write a short note on: Three level laser and Four Level laser. (2.5+2.5)
