Course Outcomes

CO-1
Learning basic terms of Thermodynamics and Determining the interconversion of heat energy into
work energy and vice versa
CO-2 Engineering Applications of First law of Thermodynamics to Non Flow and Steady Flow Processes
Engineering Applications of Second law of Thermodynamics to heat and work conversion with the
CO-3
concept of Entropy to various Processes
Section – A (4 questions × 2 marks = 8 marks)
(2) (CO-1)
1. What is meant by Point and Path function?
2. Distinguish between Intensive and Extensive properties. (2) (CO-1)

3 Elaborate the term enthalpy and internal energy (2) (CO-2)

4. State Clausius and Kelvin planck Statement of 2nd Law of thermodynamics (2) (CO-3)

Section – B (2 questions × 4 marks = 8 marks)

a) Explain Zeroth Law of thermodynamics and the First law of thermodynamics? (2) (CO-1)
5.
b) Describe Energy—a property of system? (2) (CO-1)

Air enters a compressor at 105 Pa and 25°C having volume of 1.8 m3/kg and is (4) (CO-1)
compressed to 5 × 105 Pa isothermally.

Section – C (1 questions × 8 marks = 8 marks)
(6) (CO-2)
a) At the inlet to a certain nozzle the enthalpy of fluid passing is 2800 kJ/kg, and the
velocity is 50 m/s. At the discharge end the enthalpy is 2600 kJ/kg. The nozzle is
horizontal and there is negligible heat loss from it.
(i) Find the velocity at exit of the nozzle.
8. (ii) If the inlet area is 900 cm2 and the specific volume at inlet is 0.187 m3/kg, find the
mass flow rate.
(iii) If the specific volume at the nozzle exit is 0.498 m3/kg, find the exit area of nozzle.
