 Answer any one full question from each unit.
 Use heat transfer data hand book is permitted.

UNIT- I
1. a) How do conduction, convection and radiation modes of heat transfer CO1 (06)
differ? What is essential for all those modes?
b) What are the different kinds of boundary conditions? Explain briefly. CO1 (06)
c) A flat plate has thickness 5cm, thermal conductivity 1 w/m K, CO1 (04)
convective heat transfer co-efficient on its two flat faces are 10w/m 2k
and 20 w/m2k. Find the overall heat transfer coefficient for the plate.
d) A thin flat plate 2mx2m is hanging freely in air. The temperature of the CO1 (04)
surroundings is 250c. Solar radiation is falling on one side of the plate
at the rate of 500w/m 2. The temperature of the plate will remain
constant at 300c. Find the convective heat transfer coefficient.

2. a) What is thermal contact resistance? How can it be reduced? CO1 (04)


b) Derive an expression for critical radius of insulation for cylindrical body. CO1 (06)
Give practical example to explain the concept of critical radius.
c) A 50cm diameter pipe line in the arctic carries hot oil at 30 0c and it is CO1 (10)
exposed to surroundings temperature of -200c. A special powder
insolation 50mm thick having a thermal conductivity of 7x10 -3 w/mk
surrounds pipe. The film heat transfer coefficient on the outside of the
pipe is 12w/m2k. Calculate the rate of heat loss from the pipe per
meter length, neglecting thermal resistance of the pipe line.

UNIT– II
3. a) What are fins? Why are they used? How does heat transfer take place CO1 (04)
from a fin?
b) Derive an expression in one dimensional differential equation of CO1 (08)
temperature for a fin of uniform cross section.
c) A long rod 20mm in diameter has one end maintained at 110 0c. The CO1 (08)
surface of the rod is exposed to ambient air at 20 0c with convection
coefficient of 5w/m2K. Calculate the temperature distribution equation
and heat loss from the rod having thermal conductivity of 1.5w/m K

4. a) Find the temperature –time history of a lumped body. CO1 (08)


b) What do you understand from Biot number, Fourier number? What is CO1 (04)

the value of Biot number for lumped system analysis?

c) A person is found dead at 5pm in a room whose temperature is 20 0c. CO1 (08)
The temperature of the body is measured to be 25 oc when found, and
the heat transfer coefficient is estimated to be 8w/m 2k. Modelling the
human body a 20cm diameter and 1.7m long cylinder. Calculate actual
time of death of the person. Take thermophysical properties of the
body. ρ = 900Kg/m3 Cp = 4000J/kgK and K = 6.08w/mK.

UNIT- III
5. a) Explain dimensional analysis and apply the same to forced convection CO2 (08)
heat transfer process.
b) Describe briefly the hydraulic boundary layer over a flat plate when a CO2 (04)
free stream of fluid flows longitudinally over it.
c) A vertical pipe 7.5m in diameter carrying hot water is located in CO2 (08)
atmospheric air at 100c while the temperature of the outer surface of
the pipe is 700c. The pipe is 2m in height. Find the heat loss from the
pipe per hour.

6. a) What is free convection? How do you differ from forced convection? CO2 (04)
b) Define clearly and what is significance of the following. CO2 (06)
i) Prandl number
ii) Grashoff number
iii) Nusselt number.
c) Water at 100c is to be heated to 40 0c in tube of 2cm diameter. The CO2 (10)
outside of the tube is wrapped with an electric heating element that
produces a uniform flux of 200w/m3 over the surface and the mass flow
rate is 0.2kg/s. Find i) The Reynolds number ii) The heat transfer
coefficient iii) Length of the pipe. The relevant properties of water at
250c are given below:- ρ = 997Kg/m 3 Cp =4180J/kgK and
K = 0.608w/mK μ = 910x10-7 Ns/m2.

UNIT- IV
7. a) Find the expression for effectiveness of a parallel flow heat exchanger. CO3 (08)
b) Differentiate between evaporator and condenser. CO3 (04)
c) A counter flow double pipe heat exchanger using superheated steam is CO3 (08)
used to heat water at the rate of 10500Kg/hr. The steam enters the
heat exchanger at 1800c and leaves at 1300c. The inlet and exit
temperature of water ate 30 0c and 800c respectively. If overall heat
transfer coefficient from steam to water is 814w/m 2c. Calculate the
heat transfer area. What would be the increase in area if the fluid flows
were parallel?

8. a) With the help of neat boiling curve for water, explain different regimes CO4 (08)
of boiling.
b) What do you understand by film wise and dropwise condensation? CO4 (04)
c) Saturated steam at 900c and 70Kpa is condensed on outer surface of CO4 (08)
1.5m long and 2.5m diameter tube which is maintained at uniform
temperature of 700c. Assuming film wise condensation, calculate the
heat transfer rate on the tube surface. Use properties of water at
800c.ρ = 974Kg/m3 hfg = 2309 KJ/kg and Kf = 0.668w/mk and
μ = 0.355x10-3kg/ms.

9. a) What is shape factor and reciprocity theorem? CO5 (04)
b) Explain the following: CO5 (08)
i) Kirchoff’s law
ii) Wein’s displacement law
iii) Emissivity and radiosity.
c) Two large parallel plates having emissivity of 0.5 each exist at CO5 (08)
temperature of 1200K and 300k.
i) Find heat transfer rate per m2 of the plate.
ii) Find heat transfer rate if a radiation shields with an emissivity of
0.05 on both sides is placed between the two plates.

10. a) What are the different modes of mass transfer? Explain briefly with CO5 (06)
example.
b) Explain Fick’s law of diffusion. CO5 (06)
c) A well is 30m deep and 9m in diameter is exposed to atmospheric CO5 (08)
pressure at 250c. The air at the top has 50% relative humidity. Find the
diffusion rate of water vapor through the well if DAB = 2.58x10-5 m2/s.
