CO3 To apply the principles of heat transfer and design heat exchangers and to understand basic terms Applying(P)
related to heat exchangers.
CO4 Students will be able to solve complex engineering problems related to radiation heat transfer, based on Applying(P)
acquired knowledge.
CO BL MARK

PART A
Answer All Questions

1. What are the common causes of fouling in a heat exchanger? How does fouling affect
CO3 1 (3)
heat transfer and pressure drop?
2. What is the effectiveness of a heat exchanger? CO3 1 (3)

3. Define NTU for a heat exchanger. CO3 1 (3)

4. What is Planck's law for electromagnetic radiation. CO4 1 (3)

5. What is Wiens's Displacement law for thermal radiation? CO4 1 (3)

6. Define kirchoff"s law of radiation CO4 1 (3)

PART B
Answer Any Two Question(s)

7. Exhaust gases flowing through a tubular heat exchanger at the rate of 0.4 kg/s are cooled
from 450°C to 150°C by water initially at 15°C. The specific heats of exhaust gases and
water may be taken as 1.13 and 4.19 kJ/kg°C respectively, and the overall heat transfer
CO3 3 (8)
coefficient from gases to water is 140 W/m²°C. Calculate the surface area required for the
following cases, when the cooling water flow is 0.5 kg/s: (i) Parallel flow; (ii) Counter-
flow
8. The following data relate to a parallel flow heat exchanger in which air is heated by hot
exhaust gases: Heat transferred per second = 46.52 kJ; Inside heat transfer coefficient =
116 W/m²°C; Outside heat transfer coefficient = 186 W/m²°C. Inlet and outlet
temperatures of hot fluid = 400°C and 150°C, respectively. Inlet and outlet temperatures CO3 3 (8)
of the cold fluid = 50°C and 100°C, respectively; Inside and outside diameter of the tubes
= 50 mm and 60 mm, respectively. Calculate the length of the tube required for necessary
heat transfer to occur. Assume the tube resistance to be negligible
9. Glycerin (Cp = 2400 J/kg · °C) at 20°C and 0.3 kg/s is to be heated by ethylene glycol
(Cp = 2500 J/kg. °C) at 60°C and the same mass flow rate in a thin-walled double- pipe
parallel-flow heat exchanger. If the overall heat transfer coefficient is 380 W/m² °C and CO3 3 (8)
the heat transfer surface area is 5.3 m², determine (a) the rate of heat transfer and (b) the
outlet temperatures of the glycerin and the glycol

determine the rate of heat loss by radiation through the ceiling.

liquid oxygen at −183°C. The inner wall is covered with a painting of ε= 0.5 .The outer
sphere temperature is 20°C with the same painting .Determine heat radiated. If another CO4 3 (8)
