Answer ALL Questions

UNIT I

1. A bar of square cross-section connects two metallic structures. One structure is

maintained at a temperature 200°C and the other is maintained at 50°C. The bar 20 mm
x 20 mm is 100 mm long and is made of mild steel (k = 0.06 kW/m K). The
surroundings are at 20°C and the heat transfer coefficient between the bar and the
surroundings is 0.01 kW/𝑚2 K. Derive an equation for the temperature distribution
along the bar and hence calculate the total heat flow rate from the bar to the
surroundings. (3)
2. An electric current of 34,000 A flows along a flat steel plate 12.5 mm thick and 100
mm wide. The temperature of one surface of the plate is 82°C and that of the other is
95°C. Find the temperature distribution across the plate, and the value and position of
the maximum temperature. Also calculate the total amount of heat generated per metre
length of the place and the flow of heat from each surface of the plate. The end effects
along the short sides of the plate may be neglected. Given for steel: 𝜌=12 x 10−6Ω cm
and k = 52.4 W/m K. (2)

3. Will the concept of critical thickness of insulation applicable for plane wall? If not,
why? (1)

4. Water at 10°C flows over a flat plate (at 90°C) measuring 1 m x 1m, with a velocity of
2 m/s. Properties of water at 50°C are ρ = 988.1 kg/m3, υ = 0.556 x 10-6 m2/s, Pr = 3.54
and k = 0.648 W/m K. To find: (a) The length of plate over which the flow is laminar,
(b) the rate of heat transfer from the entire plate. (3)

5. Water flows through a 20 mm ID at a rate of 0.01 kg/s entering at 10°C. The tube is
wrapped from outside by an electric heating element that produces a uniform flux of 15
kW/m2. If the exit temperature of water is 40°C, estimate (a) the Reynolds number, (b)
the heat transfer coefficient, (c) the length of pipe needed, (d) the inner tube surface
temperature at exit, (e) the friction factor, (f) the pressure drop in the tube, and (g) the
pumping power required if the pump efficiency is 60%. Neglect entrance effects.
Properties of water at mean temperature of 25°C are: ρ = 997 kg/m3, Cp = 4180 J/kg K.
µ = 910 x 10-6 Ns/m2, and k = 0.608 W/m K. (2)

6. Why the local heat transfer coefficient in thermal entrance region higher than that in
the developed region? (1)

7. Determine the heat lost by radiation per metre length of 80 mm diameter pipe at 300°C
if (a) located in a large room with red brick walls at a temperature of 27°C; (b) enclosed
in a 160 mm diameter red brick conduit at temperature of 27°C. Take 𝜀 for pipe as 0.79
and that of brick conduit as 0.93. (3)
8. Determine the rate of heat loss by radiation from a steel tube of outside diameter 0.07
m and 3 m long at a temperature of 227°C if tube is placed within a square brick conduit
0.3 m side and at 27°C. Take 𝜀(steel) = 0.79 and 𝜀(brick) = 0.93. (2)

transfer? (1)

10. In a large steam power plant a shell and tube type condenser is used which has the
following data: Heat exchange rate = 2100 MW; Number of shell passes = 1 ; Number
of tubes = 31,500; Number of tube passes = 2; Diameter of each tube = 25 mm; The
condensation temperature = 50°C; Mass flow rate of cooling water = 3.4 x 104 kg/s;
Heat transfer coefficient on the steam side = 11,400 W/𝑚2 K; Inlet water temperature
= 20°C. Using LMTD-correction factor method and 𝜀-NTU method, calculate (a) the
outlet temperature of cooling water, (b) the length of tube pass. Properties of water at
27°C are:𝑐𝑝 =4.18 kJ/kgK, 𝜇= 855 x 10−6 Ns/𝑚2 , k = 0.613 W/mK and Pr = 5.83.
