Batch : 22th (Evening) Full Marks : 40
Time : 2 Hours

Answer any two (02) of the following questions from individual part.

Part A
1. ( 1+3+6 = 10 )
a) What is change in enthalpy for an isothermal process?
a) State and explain the various statements of second law of thermodynamics.
b) Calculate the internal energy and enthalpy changes that occur when air is changed from an
initial state of 277 K and 10 bar where its molar volume is 3.18 m3.kmol-1 to a final state of
333 K and 1 atm. Assume for air that PV/T is constant and Cv = 24 and Cp = 32.3 kJ.kmol-1.K-1.

2. ( 4+6 = 10 )
a) With the neat sketch write the working principle of carnot engine.
b) Explain PVT behavior of pure substances with the help of PV and PT diagrams.

3. ( 3+7 = 10 )
a) Derive an equation for the COP of carnot refrigeration cycle.
b) A refrigerated space is maintained at -12°C (261.15K) and cooling water is available at 21°C
(294.15K). Refrigeration capacity is 35.2kW.The evaporator and condenser are sufficient size
that a 5.6°C (5.6K) minimum temperature difference for heat transfer can be realized in
each. The refrigerant tetrafluoroethane (HFC-134a) vaporizes at a pressure 1.471 bar where
H2=388.03kJ.kg-1 and S2=1.7392kJ.kg-1.K-1 and HFC-134a condenses at 6.977 bar where H4=
236.83kJ.kg-1 and H’3=420.33kJ.kg-1 .
I. What is value of ω for a Carnot refrigerator?
II. Calculate ω and m for the vapor-compression cycle if the compressor efficiency is
0.80.

Part B
4. ( 5+5 = 10 )
a) What is Rankine cycle in thermal power plant? Describe.
b) A central power plant, rated at 800,000 kW, generates steam at 685K and discards heat to a
river at 325K. If the thermal efficiency of the plant is 68% of the maximum possible value,
how much heat is discarded to the river at rated power?

5. ( 2+5+3 = 10 )
a) What is internal energy?
b) Sketch the air-standard Otto cycle and Diesel cycle.
c) Explain the concept of entropy in brief.
6. ( 4+6 = 10 )
a) Explain Moiller diagram.
b) Air is compressed from an initial condition of 1 bar and 298.15 K to a final state of 5 bar and
298.15 K by two different mechanically reversible processes in a closed system:
I. Isothermal compression.
II. Adiabatic compression followed by cooling at constant volume.

Assume air to be an ideal gas with the constant heat capacities, Cv = (7/3) R and Cp = (8/3) R.
At 298.15 K and 1 bar the molar volume of air is 0.02479 m3.mol-1 and after adiabatic
compression the final volume of air is 0.005958 m3. Calculate the work required, heat
transferred, and the changes in internal energy and enthalpy of the air for each process.
