Validity, trustworthiness and rigour: quality

and the idea of qualitative research

By

Nathan E & Yitagesu H.

Outline
• What does it mean the topic of discussion?
Does it make sense?
• How would this help us in our own research?
Which element of it and how ?
• What do you say about the writing itself?
What may improve?

What is the topic of discussion?
Does it make sense? How

• The paper argues that it gives less sense to

establish a set of generic criteria for making
quality judgments about qualitative research as
is no unified qualitative research paradigm

• no universal criteria for judging quality in

qualitative research

What is the topic of discussion?
Does it make sense? How

• However, a qualitative researcher should rigorously

follow a number of verification strategies contributing
for trustworthiness (credibility, dependability,
transferability and confirmability)

• Each of them are subjected to arguments to researchers

of different epistemic paradigms

What is the topic of discussion?
Does it make sense? How

• the responsibility for ensuring rigour lies

solely with the researchers themselves rather
than with the readers of the research report

How would this help you in your own
research?
Which element of it and how?
• The paper provides us to concentrate on looking
a different approaches to judge the quality rather
than searching for an overarching set of criteria
each
• All argued criteria are important to our future
qualitative research activities

What do you say about the writing itself?
What may improve?

• The paper helps us to consider quality

judgment criteria with respect to different
notions of qualitative research but,
– the author presented “validity” as separate entity
rather than part of trustworthness
– full of repetitions
