Communication Barriers

I. How to Avoid Communication Barriers –Avoid using filler words

Filler words such as ‘um’, ‘maybe’ and the likes should be evaded

in order to deliver your message clearly. In the movie clip where Lara Jean

almost bumps Peter Kavinsky with her car and she stutteringly tries —

using ‘uh’ and ‘um’ between the words, to convince Peter that she could

drive, Peter was hesitant to walk away at first but decided to leave

unconvinced anyway.

II. Characteristics of Competent Intercultural Communication –Politeness

In relation to culture, other elements such as social status should

also be taken consideration when communicating with others, for instance

in the scene when Peter kindly says thank you to the waitress and

recognizes the waitress’ name as Joan showing politeness to her.

III. Skills required for Competent Intercultural Communication –Demonstrating

willingness to meet others

In order to meet others at least halfway or by implying that you’re

willing to adapt, one must learn a few basic phrases in other people’s

language, In the movie, Kitty searched up on the internet that Scottish

people uses the word ‘crack’ to say fun and by that simple gesture she

demonstrated that she was willing to communicate with others.
