To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before

Communication Barriers

I. 7C’s of Effective Communication –Clearness

A good communicator must acquire the feature of Clearness or

Clarity which infers the use of simple words in expressing ideas; this can

be seen in the scene where Josh Sanderson asked “cool” to Lara Jeans at

the bleachers implying that they were still friends even after the series of

drama.

II. Barriers to Effective Communication (Sender-Oriented) –Poor Structure of

Message

It is one of the hindrances in effective communication in which the

sender fails to organize the ideas in his/her message, making the receiver

confused as to what the sender’s true intent. This barrier was portrayed in

the movie when Lara Jean tries to convey her explanation to Josh

Sanderson where she says “It’s like driving”, Josh later on still couldn’t

understand so Lara Jean just started again without relating it to other

scenarios.

III. Barriers to Effective Communication (Receiver-Oriented) –Tendency to

Evaluate

One of the receiver-oriented barriers is the tendency to evaluate

where in the receiver judges the sender’s message, this evaluation is due

to his/her attitude or knowledge that is in conflict with the sender’s

message. In the movie scene where Peter and Josh are arguing about why

Lara Jean broke up with Peter and Peter shouts that it’s because she is still

in love with Josh, then Margot heard it, making her tear up and run thinking

that her sister was really in love with her boyfriend without hearing out Lara

Jean’s explanation.
