ACTIVITY 3. ESSAY WRITING
● How can you overcome cultural barriers in communication?
● Guide for writing your essay
○ List down at least three (3) ways in overcoming cultural differences in communication.
○ Provide a brief explanation of each.
○ Was there a situation wherein you encountered misinterpretation because of cultural
differences? Explain what happened and how you handled the situation.
Cultural barriers take many forms, from differences in religious beliefs to communication challenges
created by unfamiliar languages and non-verbal behaviors. Overcoming this sorts of obstacles isn’t always
easy, but it’s worth the effort to promote mutual respect and good will between people of different
backgrounds.
One way in overcoming cultural differences in communication is that familiarizing yourself with other
culture. Make an effort to learn a little bit about other people’s cultures. Do some research, watch films about
the culture of other, and through this, you can begin the process of building bridges between your own culture
and less familiar ones. You’ll probably even have fun doing it. Another way is that ask questions politely when
faced with cultural quirks. If you find unusual or perplexing habit of someone, don’t be afraid to voice your
curiosity, just make sure you do it so genially. Asking questions is often the best way to learn. However, it is
important to form your questions tactfully to avoid offending the person or making them feel singled out. Lastly,
preventing and dealing with cultural conflict, having a sense of humor. Think of the occasional
miscommunication or social faux pas as something to laugh off, not something to be ashamed of. Humor is
one human trait that has universal appeal. When used in the right way at the right time and place, it is also
having the capacity to transcend language, culture, and other perceived sources of separation. Being able to
laugh at will also help put the other person at ease when they might otherwise feel embarrassed.
Back in my elementary days, I have this friend of mine, giving her a nickname Blacky because of her
color. I thought it was okay with her but as time passed by, her attitude towards me changed. I ask her what’s
the problem and that she told me about the name I used to call her is the problem because there are some
students who also call her Blacky other than me. I said my apology to her. Hopefully, she accepted my apology
and were back to what we used to be. After that, I used to call her by her name. Some people are quick to
forgive. Others may have to think about what you said and need time to get over hurt feelings or anger. Doing
my best with the part that’s up to me and the rest is up to them. Also, forgiving myself too. We can learn from
our mistakes. Focus on mending the situation, not replaying it in your head. Being too self-critical can’t help
you. Neither can be wishing the situation away, thinking about what you said over and over, or dwelling on
what you could have said instead. Move forward. Focus on your energies on trying to make things right and
working on your good intentions.
