500 g Toor dal
1 tsp Turmeric powder
As required Tamarind
As required Asafoetida water
2 sprig Curry leaves
10 g Mustard seeds
4 no. Dry red chillies
4 no. Green chillies
As required Salt
15 ml Coconut Oil

About:

Dali toi is a classical preparation of the GSB community of Mangaluru region. It is a simple lentil
preparation and is also Sathvik in nature. There are lot of variations to this simple preparations from
family to family. The goal in this recipe is to achieve a balance between tamarind, hing, spiciness and
salt.

Method:

1. Rinse and wash the toor dal and pressure cook it along with turmeric powder and slit green
chilies.
2. Once the dal is cooked, mash it with a potato masher or churn it with a buttermilk churner.
3. Add salt to this and bring it to a boil.
4. Add tamarind water and hing water and try to achieve a balance between all taste profiles.
5. Temper it with mustard seeds, curry leaves and dried red chilies.

Note:

• There are a variety of variations to this dish


• Some recipes do not mandate the usage of turmeric powder.
• Hing water and Tamarind water is also optional according to some GSB families
