Latin America Technical Information Notes

LATIN: 090103-2-0-O
Issue Date: 4 March 2009 Expiration Date: 4 April 2010
To: Latin America & Caribbean Countries Region Authorized Servicers
From: LACR Indirect Subscriber Engineering Group Plantation, Florida, USA
Subject: EP150 Push to Talk (PTT) Switch Preventative Maintenance and Repair
The information contained in this LATIN is provided to assist Level III - IV Authorized Servicers in their diagnostic
process for the product(s) and conditions specified below. The information contained in this L.A.T.I.N. is for
internal purposes and for use only by Motorola Authorized Service Centers under an Authorized Servicer contract
and as described in the Motorola Latin America Countries Region Authorized Servicer Handbook. This L.A.T.I.N is
for information only. No warranty is implied or authorized.

Description: The EP150 portable radio may exhibit a premature PTT failure
if a high amount of force is applied to the PTT switch during the activation of
a PTT.
Radios Affected:
RV2081BKN8AA
RU2081BKN8AA

Detailed Information:
Excessive force on the PTT switch can cause the following issues:

• The plunger can fail

• The PTT switch can fail
• Cause the PTT switch to be lifted from the P.C. board
• Can cause the PC board to be damaged
• Can cause a broken solder connection between the PTT switch and the
PC board

If the radio currently does NOT exhibit this issue, there is a preventative
maintenance procedure that should be performed which includes the
installation of a “SHIM” device (PN 38009256001). The shim will restrict the
plungers travel, avoiding damage to the PTT switch.

Preventative Maintenance
Procedure:

1. Please use the “Contact Us” feature on the MOL website to open a “C3”
case. Once a case has been opened, you will be contacted by Motorola

R02.4
L . A . T. I . N .
Latin America Technical Information Notes
to determine the number of shims required and other further
instructions will be given.

2. Once you have acquired the shims, remove the radios front cover.
Refer to the disassembly/assembly instructions in the “Repair Notes
Document”, on Mol.

Note: Prior to inserting the shim, the PTT switch and the switch’s solder joint
should be inspected. If the switch is damaged, replace it. If the solder
connection is broken or cracked, re-solder the connection.

3. Load the Shim into the PC assembly, see Figure 1.

Figure 1

4. Press the shim into place until it snaps into the casting, see Figure 2.

to the disassembly/assembly instructions in the “Repair Notes
Document”, on Mol.

Repair Procedures
Broken Plunger on the Front Housing:

If the plunger or the mechanical PTT mechanism is broken on the front housing, replace
the front housing (PN for UHF housing NNTN7240A, PN for VHF housing NNTN7243A).
Refer to the disassembly/assembly instructions in the “Repair Notes
Document”, on Mol.

Lifted or Broken PTT Switch:

1. Remove the radios printed circuit board from the radios rear
chassis. Refer to the disassembly/assembly instructions in the
“Repair Notes Document”, on Mol.

2. If possible, repair the PTT switch by re-soldering the PTT switch

back onto the PC board, see Figure 4, otherwise, replace the
defective PTT switch (PN 4070354A01).

3. Re-assemble the PC board onto the chassis

4. Perform steps 3-6 of the Preventative Maintenance Procedure
