Abulcasis was a surgeon, physician, chemist and Islamic scholar from modern

day Cordoba, Spain. He is known as the ‘father of modern surgery’ because of


his discoveries in surgical procedures. He developed the use of Catgut for
internal stitches and invented surgical instruments to aid in the cesarean section
and cataract surgery. Abulcasis also made discoveries about haemophilia,
paralysis and pregnancy.
