1 General

1.1 Product description

SILVERSTAR Combi T, SELEKT T and SUPERSELEKT T are
high selective solar control glasses, manufactured by means of
magnetron sputtering. The coatings offer a high value of solar
protection and enhanced thermal insulation by reflection of long
wavelength heat radiation, thereby greatly reducing heat loss.
SILVERSTAR Combi T, SELEKT T and SUPERSELEKT T must
always be assembled into double or triple glazing units with the
coating on face two, facing the cavity.
SILVERSTAR Combi T, SELEKT T and SUPERSELEKT T always
have to be toughened before assembled into insulating glass units
(IGU). They cannot be used in annealed form as they obtain their
final characteristics by the tempering process.
The coatings are complying the class C standard for coated glass
as described in the European standards EN 1096-1 and 1096-3.
2017-08-30

SILVERSTAR Combi T, SELEKT T and SUPERSELEKT T were

developed to match their annealed counterpart. However, since the
products are not identical, mock-up samples of both versions
should be compared prior to mixing them in one façade.
Version: 02

1.2 Thickness and dimensions

SILVERSTAR Combi T, SELEKT T and SUPERSELEKT T are
Doc.-No.: 286-11

available in sizes of 3.21m x 6m in thicknesses of 6, 8 and 10mm.

For other dimensions and thicknesses please inquire.

1.3 Marking

1.4 Quality criteria for coatings

The manufacturer continuously monitors the optical values and
electrical resistivity of annealed SILVERSTAR Combi T, SELEKT T
and SUPERSELEKT T throughout the production process.
Mechanical and chemical stability are also checked at samples
taken from each production run.
Additionally, from each production run samples are taken and
toughened in order to check their optical and mechanical
properties according to EN 1096-1:

 colour values (L, a*, b*) for reflectance and transmittance

 photometric characteristics

 electrical surface resistance of the functional coating

 scattered light (haze)

 mechanical stability

 chemical stability
2017-08-30

The manufacturer thus ensures optimal conditions for the

reproducibility of the toughening of solar control low-E glass.
The conditions of observation for the detection and classification of
glass and coating defects are also given in the standard EN1096-1.
Version: 02

Without prior agreement between both parties only the standard

EN 1096-1 will apply for acceptance criteria of coated glass
defects.

2 Transport, Reception, Storage and

Handling

2.1 Transport
Coated glass sheets are usually transported in 2.5 ton packages.
The glass sheets must be transported vertically at 3-7 degrees tilt
angle.
The glass panes are separated by interleaving powder so that they
never touch each other.
The first pane of a jumbo or PLF pack is usually a clear float glass
to protect the coating of the second pane.
Depending on the distance of transport, the packs will be sealed
with adhesive tape in order to provide protection against moisture.

2.2 Receipt and delivery

The orientation of the coating is always indicated on special labels
on the package.
2017-08-30

Every Package must be opened with care to avoid scratches and

other damage on the glass sheet or the coating.
All deliveries are identified with a label.
Version: 02

Before processing, glass sheets should be checked in accordance

to the specifications defined in §0. Any possible defect must
immediately be reported to the supplier, accompanied with the data
Doc.-No.: 286-11

mentioned on the identification label.

No claim can be accepted for damages caused during and after
processing. Therefore the IGU-manufacturer should ensure that
the process is adapted for soft coated glass and the quality control
is appropriate for the detection of possible quality problems as
soon as possible. In case of claim, samples will be required.

2.3 Storage time

All glass products become stained if they are stored in humid
conditions. Usually this shows itself in form of a milky white layer
and is especially visible on coated glass.
All our glass, coated or uncoated, has to be stored vertically at 3-7
degrees tilt under the following conditions:

 In a dry, well ventilated warehouse, to prevent any

condensation on the surface

 Protected from water, e.g. no roof leaks

 Never outside or in open air

 Protected from sudden change in temperature or air

humidity
If the above mentioned conditions are met, the following indicative
values apply:

 Storage in closed packaging:

2017-08-30

6 months after delivery

 Storage after opening (coating remains covered; air

humidity < 60%):
Version: 02

2 months (6 months maximum total lifetime remains)

 Storage as cut to size pieces:

8 hours
Doc.-No.: 286-11

 Storage after toughening

To be processed immediately to insulation glass.
Otherwise glass has to be packed with desiccant in plastic
wrapping liner and closed with duct tape.

 Storage of packed, cut to size pieces:

Few days; depending on ambient conditions

2.4 Handling
SILVERSTAR Combi T, SELEKT T and SUPERSELEKT T must
be handled with soft, clean and dry gloves.
Do never touch the coating with anything hard or with rough
surfaces.
The coating must not be wiped with gloves, paper, etc.
In horizontal position, the coating has to face upwards.
In case you have to handle the glass with vacuum cups on the
coated side, make sure that the cups are perfectly clean, silicone
free and protected with suitable caps.
Bear in mind, that the caps reduce the maximum weight lifting
capabilities of the cups.

3 Processing

3.1 Handling on the production lines

All recommendations outlined in § 2.4 remain valid.
Ensure as little contact as possible between rollers and coating.
All handling devices have to be perfectly clean so that they don’t
leave any traces on the coating.
If the glass is handled manually, wear soft, clean and dry gloves.
Any damage in the coating induced prior to toughening might
become much more pronounced after heat treatment.

3.2 Glass cutting

SILVERSTAR Combi T, SELEKT T and SUPERSELEKT T before
toughening is cut exactly the same way as ordinary glass, but the
coating is susceptible to damage during the process.
Use a light, vaporizing cutting oil and avoid excess use of it.
2017-08-30

Always place the glass on the cutting table with the coating facing
upwards.
Any glass splinters should be blown off by dry and clean air. Never
Version: 02

wipe them with gloves.

When stacking cut sizes prior to further processing, separate the
different panes with suitable interlayer material (Cork pads, paper
or cardboard strips). If you use cork pads, the foamy side should

never touch the coating.

For Superselekt 35/14 T, an edge cut of 10cm as shown in the
picture below has to be performed. The useable width therefore Superselekt 35/14 T requires
becomes 301cm instead of 321cm. However, the full sheet, prior to an edge cut of 10cm along both

be as small as only 5cm. The exact amount depends on production
campaign and environmental conditions. We recommend either
contacting us prior to production or doing a test with one full size
sample. The manufacturer rejects any claims and complaints
concerning discoloring in the edge areas. Please be also aware
that defects such as flakes or crazing are not sorted out at the
production line.

3.3 Edge deletion

In order to protect the coating from corrosion and to achieve
secondary bond strength, the coating has to be removed on the
edges.
The width of the removed edge should be adjusted to the depth of
the secondary seal in a way that the deleted strip reaches at least
the middle of the butyl bead. This bead should not be completely
on the coating
If a coating detector is placed on the deleted strip, the LED should
remain dark.
Any grinding dust has to be sucked away to avoid scratches.

3.4 Edgework
Glass must be edge worked latest 24h after cutting. It is essential
to keep the glass fully wet during the process and wash it right
afterwards. Never let the glass dry by itself between those two
steps.
2017-08-30

During edge processing, contact with the coated side should be

avoided. If the glass needs to be supported, marks may remain on
the coating that cannot be removed any more.
Version: 02

3.5 Washing
After edge processing the glass must be washed without delay.
Residues from the edge processing should not be allowed to dry We recommend cleaning the

45°C. These values should be checked at least once per month.
Dry the panes by using an air blowing installation with clean filters.
No water should remain on the coating after drying.
The glass must never be allowed to stop inside the washing
machine.
A clean and well maintained washing machine is absolutely
indispensable for the quality of toughened SILVERSTAR Combi T,
SELEKT T and SUPERSELEKT T. Therefore regular cleaning is
the key to good results.

3.6.4 High convection furnace

High convection furnaces are generally equipped with very
powerful convection systems, in which hot air is applied to the top
and bottom side of the glass batch. The major portion of the heat
transmission is transferred into the glass via convection.
Depending on the design of the furnace system used, a wide range
of furnace settings are possible. The required heat transmission
can be set as a function of the glass surface properties. Excessive
convection and high air temperatures may, however, damage the
solar control low-E coating.
3.6.5 Dual chamber furnace with preheating chamber
Heating the solar control low-E glass in a dual chamber furnace
has the advantage that part of the heating energy is introduced in
the preheating chamber at low temperature, which results in a
shortened dwell time in the main furnace and therefore a sparing
effect on the solar control low-E coating. The glass heating process
occurs in two steps, whereby the temperature load of the glass
panes is significantly reduced at the start of the process and a
homogeneous temperature distribution is obtained.
2017-08-30

3.6.6 Cleaning the tempering system

A clean furnace is another important requirement for the
successful toughening of SILVERSTAR Combi T, SELEKT T and
SUPERSELEKT T. It is recommended to stop operating the
Version: 02

furnace with SO2 (sulphur dioxide gas) 3 to 5 days before the

toughening of SILVERSTAR Combi T, SELEKT T and
SUPERSELEKT T. Prior to the toughening of the solar control low-
Doc.-No.: 286-11

E glass, the ceramic furnace rollers can also be cleaned with a few
batches of structured glass to bind the dust particles in the furnace.
In addition, it must be checked that there are no more glass
particles in the tempering system as these could be blown onto the
glass panes during the quenching process.

3.7 Heat soak test

During the heat soak test it must be checked that the spacers are
not pressed too hard against the coating side under influence of
the weight of the glass, otherwise imprints may be formed that
cannot be removed any more.

3.8 Ceramic frit (silk screen printing on

coating)
If ceramic paints are used the performance of
SILVERSTAR Combi T, SELEKT T and SUPERSELEKT T will
break down. Emissivity as well as Ug-value will increase.

3.9 Handling of heat treated glass

Following heat treatment, each pane should be interleaved using a
special chlorine free paper.
The storage recommendations from §0 fully apply to heat treated
glass.
If transported outside the fabrication hall, the glass has to be
packed in plastic wrapping liner to protect the coating from
humidity.
Soft, clean and dry gloves must be worn for all handling.
Assemble into insulating glass units as quickly as possible.

4.1 General
Same processing requirements are applied in handling
SILVERSTAR Combi T, SELEKT T and SUPERSELEKT T as with

4.2 Edge deletion

Usually edge deletion is done right at the cutting table. However, in
some situations it might be more suitable to do this step after
tempering. In any case the step hast to be done before assembling
the panes into insulating glass units.
In order to protect the coating from corrosion and to achieve
secondary bond strength, the coating has to be removed on the
edges.
The width of the removed edge should be adjusted to the depth of
