Better to know a knot and not need it, than need a knot and not know it
Based on my understanding of the passage, knot tying is an essential skill that we should acquire in our
life. Knot tying is as essential like the food we eat. Knot tying serves with a purpose that we can utilized
with our everyday life. Knot tying can be used in our community, and in emergency cases. Therefore,
even though knot tying is not utilized in our daily living activities, there will come a time that knot tying
skills will be needed to accomplish a certain task – and this what the passage means. Lastly, I also want to
emphasize a quote saying “it is better to be prepared than to be sorry”.

Activity 3: A KNOTTY PROBLEM

Direction: Analyze the scenario/situation carefully and determine the appropriate knot that
you should use. Justify your answers. (60 points)

1. You have a rope with a damaged section in the middle and wish to avoid putting strain
on the damaged section whilst still being able to ‘pull’ on the rope.

Although it seems complicated, the Sheep Shank is one of the simplest knots to master.
This knot is intended to shorten a rope without cutting it; therefore, it may be used to tie
the rope shorter to prevent damaging the rope's damaged region. Simply verify that the
damaged piece is in the sheep shank's mainline. Strain will be taken in either direction at
the knot ends, protecting the injured portion from stresses.

2. You need to heave a line across a river. You decide to throw a light line first and pull
across a heavier line. You wish to join a thin rope to a heavier, thicker rope.
A Sheet Bend is used for connecting lines of varying diameters.  The sheet bend is a very
similar knot to the granny and square knots. It is easy to knot and will not slip under
stress, making it ideal for tying two ropes together.

3. You need to drag a large log going to your camp.

The Timber Hitch is mostly used for grasping and pulling. Historically, this form of hitch
was used to secure a length of rope around a pole or bundle of logs. The more force
drawn from the knot, the more firmly it grips. It is simple to tie, never jams, and is as
simple to untie.

4. You want to attach a smaller line to a large diameter rope.

Depending on the circumstance, it is preferable to apply a sheet bend knot. This knot is
helpful for combining lines with varying diameters or rigidities. This knot is simple to tie
and will not slip under tension, making it excellent for connecting two ropes.

5. You need to lower an injured friend down a 4 m wall with the help of your patrol.
A bowline is one of the simplest and most effective methods of securing a loop at the end
of a rope. It has the advantage of being simple to knot and untie; most importantly, it is
simple to untie after being loaded. The bowline is well-known as a rescue knot for
rescuing those who have fallen into a pit or from a cliff onto a ledge.

6. You want to attach a safety line to a carabiner and harness for use in climbing. You
need a fixed loop that you can ensure it is tied correctly, even in poor light or poor
weather.
If appropriately tied, a double-figure of eight makes an excellent loop for this purpose
and is an easy-to-spot knot. It features a function that allows it to be quickly knotted and
secured. It is very helpful for climbing; it is attached to the carabiner or harness through
the safety line.

Activity 5: Look at the picture of the different knots and identify what could be the problem with
the knots, then suggest what could be done to improve the knots. Justify your answers.

A. Is the knot safe? No

B. Will the knot work? No
C. Is it efficient? No
D. What could be the problem with the knot?
This kind of knot is unsuitable for climbing. The way it was
knotted seems complex and takes an excessive amount of time.
The knot seems difficult to untie and requires an excessive
amount of time, making it unsuitable for use during rescue
operations or in the event of an accident.
E. How would you change the knot?

Convert the knot to a bowline, which is more efficient, secure,

and easy to unbind. A bowline is secure because it does not slide
readily on its ends. Additionally, it avoids tangles when
loosened.

A. Is the knot safe? No

B. Will the knot work? Yes
C. Is it efficient? Yes
D. What could be the problem with the knot?
When one of its anchors fails, it may have a cascading effect on
the other anchors, resulting in certain failures.
E. How would you change the knot?
There is no need to change the knot. The knot is easy to be
untied and is suitable for being used on bolts which is usually
present/encountered during climbings or other related activities

A. Is the knot safe? Yes

B. Will the knot work? Yes
C. Is it efficient? Yes
D. What could be the problem with the knot?
The knot presents no difficulties. It is cost-effective, secure, and
activity-friendly. Additionally, it is simple to implement and
use.
E. How would you change the knot?
There is no need to change the knot

C. Is it efficient? Yes
D. What could be the problem with the knot?
There are no issues with the knot. It is robust, easy to perform,
and may be used to secure an object.
E. How would you change the knot?
There is no reason to alter the knot. This kind of knot is
appropriate for harnesses encountered when climbing. It is
simple to use and convenient, which is why mountain climbers
frequently utilized it.

A. Is the knot safe? Yes

B. Will the knot work? Yes
C. Is it efficient? Yes
D. What could be the problem with the knot?
The knot has an excessive number of loops, making it seem
difficult to perform. Due to the length of time required to tie the
knot, it is unsuitable for utilizing during accidents or
emergencies.
E. How would you change the knot?
It may be altered by reducing the number of loops and then
repositioning the hitch closer to the loop. The purpose is to
create a more secure and reliable knot.
