The IEEE-SA and Electrical Safety

The IEEE is a major developer of standards that directly

or indirectly address electrical safety within specific
applications or environments. The well renowned Color
Books Standards for Industrial and Commercial Power
Systems and the National Electrical Safety Code, as well
as IEEE Power Engineering standards are used through-
out industry. What’s more, the IEEE recently published a
prominent new and vital standard in the Electrical Safety
area, IEEE Std 1584-2002 for Arc Flash, that is changing
the way arc flash hazard analysis is done today.

Within the IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS), elec-

trical safety technology and related best practices have
moved to the forefront, especially with the IEEE IAS
Petroleum and Chemical Industry Committee (PCIC)
annual Electrical Safety Workshop. The Workshop pro-
vides a dynamic forum for people to meet and advance
technology, establish best work practices and accelerate
improvement in standards and regulations to reduce
electrical incidents, prevent injuries and reduce the eco-
nomic impact of electrical accident.
The IEEE Electrical Safety Resource Center
Today, more than ever, electrical safety is a major concern among those involved in
facilities construction, operation and maintenance, facilities and process design,
electrical safety services, risk management, workplace safety and regulations and
standards. Electric current exposes workers and the public to potential serious, wide-
spread hazards and many are unaware of the potential electrical hazards present in
their work environments.

Key to electrical safety is for those working with electrical current and those respon-
sible for electrical safety to be aware of standards and regulations that include
safety best practices and to have the latest information at their fingertips. That’s why
the IEEE-SA developed the IEEE Electrical Safety Resource Center.

A dynamic website, the Resource Center serves as your gateway into electrical safety
information. It provides an entrance into IEEE and other organizations’ activities
regarding electrical safety—where you get connected to groups developing standards
and to organizations providing valuable information about electrical safety, including
events and activities.

What’s more, the site provides relevant, and up-to-date case studies regarding elec-
trical safety, all enhanced by:

A current listing of key related products and publications and how to order
Electrical Safety Workshop announcements and news, as well as information
on IEEE Section workshops on Electrical Safety
Electrical safety news and an opt-in alert option so you can be alerted
when new information is posted in the site
Hot links to IEEE committees and working groups involved in
electrical safety
Robust information on the IEEE Arc Flash 1584 standard, including
sample calculations

The IEEE Electrical Safety Resource Center links professionals to organizations

addressing electrical safety and engages multiple disciplines and professions in
electrical safety. Visit it today at http://standards.ieee.org/esrc

About the IEEE-SA

A world-renowned global standards develop-
ment body, the IEEE-SA draws on the expertise
of the 37 IEEE Technical Societies and Councils
and the more than 380,000 IEEE members in
over 150 countries. More than 15,000 profes-
sionals participate in IEEE-SA standards
activities.

The IEEE has nearly 900 active standards and

more than 400 under development. Through an
open, American National Standards Institute-
accredited consensus process, participants in
the IEEE-SA standards development program
create a broad breadth of electro- and infor-
mation technology standards that are used by
large and small corporations and organiza-
tions, government agencies and consultants
worldwide.

IEEE 1584™-2002 IEEE Guide for Arc Flash Hazard Calculations

A breakthrough in the world of arc flash hazard analysis, IEEE Std 1584 makes conducting an arc flash
hazard analysis easier. The equations in the model have been embedded in a spreadsheet type calculator,
which is included with the guide. The model determines arc current, incident energy, and the arc flash
protection boundary. It includes equations for some current limiting fuses acting within their current
limiting range and a simplified method for some molded case circuit breakers operating in their
instantaneous range.
