Why are skill trades important and how can it help out youth to have a better life and

more personal satisfaction

Attention all youth! Have you ever wondered how you can find a good paying
and satisfying job without the need of a University degree? Do you want to avoid
years of studying and endless debt? Well I have an answer for you! Skilled trade
careers are often overlooked even though they can offer the same benefits as a
white-collar job.
Skill trade careers offer many advantages and cater to an individual’s interest
– you get to do what you are good at. Skills trades allow you to graduate with little to
no debt. There are many scholarships and government grants offered for these
programs. Also, many apprenticeship programs will pay their trainees for their time
on the job. Experience is gained immediately and since students learn on the job,
they are able to earn income much sooner than the average college or university
student. In Ontario, skilled trades workers make good income! Entry level positions
can start at more than $40,000, while more experienced workers can make more
than $100,000. According to immigration.ca, some of the best paying skilled trade
jobs include: industrial electrician, refrigeration and air conditioning mechanic, truck
and transport mechanic, automotive service technician, steamfitter, pipefitter,
welder, construction electrician, plumber and carpenter.
Today’s education system often presses the importance of obtaining a post-
secondary degree. There is a stigma placed on skill trades and Ontario teachers need
to do a better job in promoting careers within these fields. Students are often
pressured to enter programs that they are not very interested in for the sake of
obtaining a paper. Upon completion of many university and college programs, there
may be few employment opportunities. Rather, youth need to be informed of the
benefits of entering into a field that they will find rewarding and interesting. In an
economy where youth are coming out of school with trouble finding employment,
skill trades is an area with lots of potential. Skill trade workers are becoming more
and more valuable and in an inflationary economy, they are making very good
incomes. If you enjoy working with your hands and being active without the need for
long-term schooling, a career in skill trades just might be for you!
