AN ANALYSIS OF THE USING ASSOCIATIVE MEANING IN THE

MAHER ZAIN’S SONG

As time goes by, music was growing rapidly. Music now not only as
entertaining art but could also be a reference for a person to see about social and
culture from a different point of view, and can also be an effective media for
learning. As the effective tool to help the process of learning a foreign language
unfortunately there were the lack when interpreted the songs meaning could be
affected in the implied of the message of the song then could not be delivered as
well and the listener could not be understand what the singer want to say. To
avoid the potential of bias meaning further analysis was needed regarding the
interpretation of the real meaning in a song lyric. Thus, the researchers were
encouraged to analyze in the song’s lyric of Maher Zain’s Songs to understand
meaning, to find the truth meaning and to know the function of these meaning.

The objective of this research was to find out Associative meaning in the
lyric of song by Maher Zain. The researchers used theory Associative meaning by
Geoffrey Leech and it also this research is aimed to describe based on the context
of the song.

This research used descriptive qualitative method to give more

descriptions and discover function of associative meaning in the text. In collecting
the data, researcher utilized documentation method. In the way of process to
collection the data the researcher through some steps by collecting, marking or
underlining the phrase, sentences or words in the song’s lyric and then was
analyzed and describe by using theory of associative meaning. After analyzing
Maher Zain’s song lyric, it is showed that there are types of associative meanings
and its functions in the lyric of the songs. There were six data of connotative
meaning, five data of affective meaning, two data of social meaning, three data of
reflected meaning and two data of collocative meaning. From all types of
meaning, the researcher found that in the song often used connotative meaning to
delivered the experience in the real world to associate with the expression when
someone heard it or used it.

In conclusion, different types elicit different functions. Certainly, the speaker or

writer uses the associative meanings to performed their functions which are
related to the world since it is very appropriate to influence the addressees or
readers.
