Activity 1
SCIENTIFIC METHOD

Critical thinking involves a set of skills that help us to evaluate information,

arguments, problems, inquires and opinions in a systematic and thoughtful way.

Objective:

This activity is intended to enhance critical thinking and explain how the scientific
method has actually been used to solve scientific problems and evaluate arguments,
inquires and opinions.

Procedure: Select one news article from the newspapers or online resources about
local environmental issues, development or new discoveries. Analyze and evaluate the
environmental issues or news using the scientific methods. Attached the chosen article
or news and cite your sources.

Based on you selected article answer the following questions:

Article/News:https://medium.com/@modernspatialdivisions/improper-solid-waste-
management-in-manila-513224d50b17

1. Identify the problem.

 Improper Solid Waste Management in Manila

2. How did they research for the problem? What methods were used?
 MMDA (Metropolitan Manila Development Authority) states that the total
volume of garbage thrown by Metro Manila residents was 9,499.44 tons
per compared with 8,600 tons per day 6 years ago and this garbage can
cause flooding due to the drainage being blocked by the waste and it may
harm to the residences and the animals of the affected vicinity. This
means that they search that problem through comparing the number of
present garbage and the previous, the method were used is statistics.

3. What are the hypotheses?

a. If we don’t throw waste in esteros then we can avoid polluted water

b. If we thrown our waste in proper trash can then drainage won’t be blocked by
the waste

4. What are the experiments made?

a. There’s an operation led to clean up esteros of 10 river that is connected to

Manila bay wherein tons of trash were removed from the waterway

5. Did the experiment prove or disprove the hypothesis/es?

a. It proves the hypothesis because based on the experiment operation was

conducted and after cleaning tons waste was removed, therefore the water is polluted

b. It proves the second hypothesis, as what I mentioned tons of waste was

removed from the waterway of 10 river that was connected in Manila Bay, therefore
drainage was blocked by the waste

6. What is/are the conclusion/s?

 One of the major problem of our country nowadays was pollution wherever
we go in the world, most of the habitat present in the earth may be filled
with solid waste left by us. Most trash takes years to decompose which
may cause great damage to its environment and due to the damage it
costs in its surroundings, it may create an unhealthy and a harmful place
for creatures to live in but despite of all the warnings and efforts by the
government towards this issue it was still the major threat to us, According
to Solid Waste Management office (SWMO) it states that the actual
volume of waste in Metro Manila that was properly disposed in its dumping
area has reached 29,645.44 cubic meters per day and that was equivalent
2
to 54.81%, Therefore 45.19% of garbage was not properly disposed.
Imagined if those waste are properly disposed, for sure we will have a
fresh and clean environment and most importantly we will have a safe
environment.
