Melanin – The Skin Pigment

1
Melanin – The Skin Pigment
➢ Tyrosinase is the enzyme that catalyzes the production of
melanin.

➢ Excessive production of melanin in the melanocytes of the

skin results in tanning.

2
Skin Lightening
Skin lightening effect cannot be brought about by one single
mechanism.

It can occur effectively only by a synchronized combination of

various biological mechanisms in skin cells.

3
Targets for Skin Lightening

Major targets like Tyrosinase inhibition and Melanogenesis

inhibition

when supported by Antioxidant and Anti inflammatory

mechanisms

the product exerts a positive effect on skin cells, and that is a

crucial step in creating or maintaining light pigmented healthy
and conditioned skin.

4
Skin Lightening Nutrients: Key Benefits

➢ Improves skin complexion.

➢ Helps lighten/ remove blemishes and freckles.

➢ Nourishes skin to make it bright and radiant.

➢ Protects skin against harmful UV radiation.

Glabridin
8
Glabridin - Mechanism of Action
Glabridin helps to lighten and brighten the skin by inhibiting
melanin formation, mainly by the inhibition of tyrosinase
activity.

Glabridin also has anti-inflammatory effects via inhibition of

superoxide anion production and cyclooxygenase activity.

Glycyrrhizinic acid – UV-B Protection

Glycyrrhizinic acid is reported to offer protection against UV-B

light-induced damage in human melanoma cells.

Rossi T, Benassi L, Magnoni C, et al. Effects of glycyrrhizin on UVB-irradiated

melanoma cells. In Vivo. 2005 Jan;19(1):319-22.

17
Tetrahydrocurcuminoids

18
Common Name: Turmeric
Botanical Name: Curcumin longa
Plant part used: rhizome
Active components: 95% Curcuminoids

19
Features

Tetrahydrocurcuminoids offer effective topical antioxidant

protection. Its antioxidant action is of a comprehensive
“bioprotectant” nature, efficiently preventing the formation of
free radicals, while quenching pre-formed ones as well.

This dual action protects the skin cells from damage by UV

radiation and the resultant inflammation and injury with far
reaching beneficial effects on overall health and well being.
