INTRODUCTION
In service education is the continuation of education when the employee is in service.′It is an
organized educational programme to assist the individuals in an organization in attaining new
skills and knowledge, gaining increased level of competence and growing professionally.′In
service education may be part of any program of staff development.

DEFINITION

In-service education is a planned education activities intended to build upon the educational and
experimental basis of the professional nurse for the enhancement of practice, education,
administration and research or theoretical development aimed at improving the health of the
public. -The American Nurses Association

The education given to a nurse while in service for her professional growth is called in-service
education.-N.N. Yalayasamy.

AIMS

● It helps to improve professional growth and development.


● It gives a chance for promotion for the staff members.
● The individual nurses upgrade their knowledge and skills.
● It enhances to improve the performance while rendering care to the clients.

CHARACTERISTICS

PURPOSE

● Helps to improve professional competence.′

techniques.′
● Helps to update the knowledge and skills at all levels.′
● Nurses can update the knowledge regarding current research and development.′
● Develops interest and job satisfaction among the staff.
● ′Encourage the employees in achieving staff development and self confidence.′
● Develops leadership skills, motivation and better attitudes

NEEDS FOR INSERVICE EDUCATION:

● ′Needs for development of manual, behavioral and communication skills essential for
execution of their jobs.′

complicated.′

potentialities and efficiency of their job.

FACTORS AFFECTING IN SERVICE EDUCATION

1. Cost of health care: through in service education programmes may increase the efficiency
of nursing services; they add additional expenditure to the health care delivery system.
2. Manpower: it require qualified human resources which means an increase I the human
resources component.
3. Changes in nursing practice: there are frequent changes in the programme of in service
education.
4. Standard: it is essential to maintain the high quality of nursing practice.
5. Organization of nursing development: it is important that develop practicing approaches
are organized well.

1. ORIENTATION: Orientation means providing new employees with basic information
about the employer.
2. SKILL TRAINING: It provides employees with skills and attitudes required for the job
and keeps them abreast of changing methods and new techniques
3. LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT DEVELOPMENT: It equips a selected group of
employees to shoulder growing responsibilities and new positions.′Staffs should have skills
in leadership and management in order to guide employees.′They mainly focus to develop

4. CONTINUING EDUCATION: Continuing education is all the learning activities that
occur offer an individual has completed his basic education.

PLANNING FOR IN SERVICE EDUCATION:

Planning is essential if the learning need of nurses are to be met and available resources are to be
used to good advantages. Effective planning is required at all level.

STEPS IN PLANNING PROCESS:

1. Establishing goals with purpose: Purpose gives direction in planning. It identifies reason
for existence. Purpose are based on the learning needs and social needs; so it has to be
reviewed from time to time and restated as appropriate.
2. Establishing goals and objectives: Planning moves towards goals which are significant and
realistic, which can be attained and objectives should be attainable. An objective is specific

- To assist the nurse in identifying and meeting current learning needs generated by
changing professional practice.
- To promote the development of leadership potential of nurse.
- To identify nursing problems and in seeking solution to them.
- To disseminate new information from varied channel.
- To develop varied teaching methods for extending nursing knowledge and competencies.
- To assess the health needs of nurses, hospitals and community to plan, implement and
evaluate educational programme in hospital and health facilities.
3. Determining needs and priorities: Assessment of needs will be done by survey, through
mailed questionnaire, interview, formal and informal discussion with participants and
checklist. After assessing the needs prioritization of the needs has to be done.
4. Assessing the available resources for establishing the program: Careful assessment of
ways and means to meet the established program goal. Faculty, finances and facilities may be
seen as the major resources required for a continuing education program. A broad survey of
the major resources are necessary to the total continuing nursing education.
5. Plan the budget appropriate for the program: Separate budget is required for each
activity. Sometimes budget for in-service training or continuing education program will be
sanction by the Government, university grants or fee collected from participants.
6. Reassessing the goals:
- Uses teaching techniques that empower staff.
- Applies frequently assess the learning needs of the staff.

PRINCIPLES OF IN-SERVICE EDUCATION

● Have the organizational structure as simple as possible.


● Don’t do many things at a time.
● Avoid being involved in complex and long term project.
● Start with those problems that disturb the person most.
● Be flexible.
● Move step by step, from simple to complex situation.
● Start in-service education in simple and easy way so that they can remember the fact as they
change.
● There should be compliance with stated educational standards.
● In service education is the one of the category of adult education.
● It helps in meeting the academic needs.
● It is an essential means of providing education.

PROBLEMS RELATED TO IN-SERVICE EDUCATION PROGRAMME

● Lack of incentive, motivation and interest.


● Inappropriate methodology.
● In adequate educational technique.
● Inappropriate curriculum and courses.
● Inadequate training of teachers and educators.
● Organizational problems
● Functional problems.
● Lack of specific objectives.
● Lack of follow up programmes.

ADVANTAGES OF IN-SERVICE EDUCATION PROGRAMME

nursing.

DISADVANTAGES

● It is time consuming.
● Proper planning is necessary.
● It disturbs the normal ward routine.
● It can be expensive.
● It is not easy to organize.
