Among the environmental spectres confronting humanity in the 21st
century – global warming, the destruction of rain forests, overfishing of the
oceans – a shortage of fresh water is at the top of the list, particularly in the
developing world. Hardly a month passes without a new study making
another alarming prediction, further deepening concern over what a World
Bank expert calls the “grim arithmetic of water.” Recently the United Nations
said that 2.7 billion people would face severe water shortages by 2025 if
consumption continuous at current rates. Fears about a parched future
arise from a projected growth of world population from more than six
billion today to an estimated nine billion in 2050. Yet the amount of fresh
water on Earth is not increasing. Nearly 97 percent of the planet’s water is
salt water in seas and oceans. Close to 2 percent of Earth’s water is frozen in
polar ice sheets and glaciers, and a fraction of one percent is available for
drinking, irrigation, and industrial use.
Gloomy water news, however, is not just a thing of the future: Today an
estimated 1.2 billion people drink unclean water, and about 2.5 billion lack
proper toilets or sewerage systems. More than five million people die each
year from water-related diseases such as cholera and dysentery. All over the
globe farmers and municipalities are pumping water out of the ground faster
than it can be replenished.
Still, as I discovered on a two-month trip to Africa, India, and Spain, a host
of individuals, organizations, and businesses are working to solve water’s
dismal arithmetic.

Malnutrition among children in refugee is a critical public health concern
due to the heightened vulnerability. The rate of malnutrition in refugees’
camp needs to be viewed as not just a health issue but as a serious protection
and access to basic rights failure. The magnitude of acute malnutrition among
refugee camps in Ethiopia is relatively well-documented. A nutritional survey
done in 2014 among south Sudanese refugee camps showed that the
prevalence of acute malnutrition was almost two-fold the emergency
threshold of 15%.
Acute malnutrition is not only a condition that kills but also has long term
health and developmental consequences among recovered children after
receiving appropriate treatment. These long-term consequences include an
increased risk of stunted growth, impaired cognitive development and a
greater chance of developing non-communicable diseases in adulthood. This
demonstrates that it is of utmost importance to invest not only in the
treatment of acute malnutrition but also in its prevention.

The problem, as well as the solution to malnutrition, is multi-faceted. In


addition to an actual shortage of food; poor sanitation, a lack of available
potable water, caring practices and insufficient health services are all
significant factors contributing to the population’s overall nutritional status
and health. There is no single silver bullet that will instantly eradicate
malnutrition from the refugee camps but only through a holistic approach and
strong group effort. Effective policies and programs to alleviate malnutrition
requires an understanding of the determinants of acute malnutrition in the
refugee camps.

Thomas Matulessy, also known as Kapitan Pattimura or Ahmad Lussy or simply
Pattimura, was an Ambonese soldier and National Hero of Indonesia.
Pattimura was born on 8 June 1783 in Saparua, Maluku; the name Pattimura was
his pseudonym. His parents were Frans Matulessia and Fransina Tilahoi, and he had
a little brother named Yohanis. Pattimura joined the British army after they took the
Maluku islands from the Dutch colonials. When the islands were returned to the
Dutch in 1816, he was dismissed. Concerned that the Dutch would implement
programs that limited his people, Pattimura led an armed rebellion that captured
Fort Duurstede on 16 May 1817. Killing the inhabitants of the fortress and fighting
off Dutch reinforcements, on 29 May he was declared the leader of the Maluku
people. Due to betrayal from Booi's king, Pati Akoon, and Tuanakotta, Pattimura was
arrested on 11 November 1817. He and his fellows were sentenced to death. On 16
December 1817, Pattimura together with Anthony Reebok, Philip Latumahina, and
Said Perintah were hanged in front of Fort Nieuw Victoria in Ambon.
Pattimura and his war have been used as symbols for both Maluku independence,
such as with the short-lived Republic of South Maluku, and Indonesian patriotism. In
Ambon, he is commemorated in the names of the University of Pattimura, Pattimura
Airport, and a street, as well as a statue; there are also streets named after him
throughout the archipelago.

The most common of tsunamis are underneath quakes. To understand
underwater-earth quakes, you may first understand plate tectonics. The theory of
plate tectonics suggests the lithosphere or top layer of the Earth, is made up of a series
of huge plates. There plates make up the continents and seafloor. They rest on
underlying viscous layer called the asthenosphere.

Think of a pie cut into eight slices. The pie crust would be the lithosphere and the
hot sticky pie filling underneath would be the asthenosphere. On the Earth, these
plates are constantly in motion, moving along each other at a speed of 1 to 2 inches
(2,5 centimetres) per year. The movement occurs most dramatically along fault lines
(where the pie is cut). These motions are capable of producing earthquakes and
volcanism, which when they occur at the bottom of the ocean, are two possible sources
of tsunamis.
When two plates come into region known as a plate boundary, a heavier plate can
slip under a lighter one. This is called subduction. Underwater subduction often leaves
enormous “handprint” in the form of deep ocean trenches along the seafloor. In some
cases of subduction, part of the seafloor connected to the lighter plate may “snap up”
suddenly due to pressure from sinking plate. This result is an earthquake. The focus
of earthquake is the point within the Earth when the rupture first occurs, rock break,
and the first seismic is the point on the seafloor directly above the focus.
When this piece of the plate snaps up and sends tons of rock shooting upward with
tremendous force, the energy of that force is transferred to the water. The energy
pushes to the water upward above normal sea level. This is the birth of a tsunami. The
earthquake that generated the December 26, 2004 tsunami in the Indian ocean was
9.0 on the richer scale – one of the biggest in recorded history.

Nitrogen fixation is a process by which nitrogen is continuously fed into


biological circulation. In this process, certain algae and bacteria convert nitrogen into
ammonia (NH3). This newly-created ammonia is then for the most part absorbed by
plants.
The opposite process of denitrification returns nitrogen to the air. During
the process of denitrification, bacteria cause some of the nitrates from the soil to
convert into gaseous nitrogen or nitrous oxide (N20). In this gaseous form, the
nitrogen returns to the atmosphere.

Vaccines are prepared from harmful viruses or bacteria and administered to
patients to provide immunity to specific disease. The various types of vaccines are
classified according to the method by which they are derived.
The most basic class of vaccines actually contains disease-causing microorganisms
that have been killed with a solution containing formaldehyde. In this type of vaccine,
the microorganisms are dead and therefore cannot cause disease; however, the
antigens found in and on the microorganisms can still stimulate the formation of
antibodies. Examples of this type of vaccine are the ones that fight influenza, typhoid
fever, and cholera.
A second type of vaccine contains the toxins produced by the microorganisms
rather than the microorganisms themselves. This type of vaccine is prepared when
the microorganism itself does little damage but the toxin within the microorganism
is extremely harmful. For example, the bacteria that cause diphtheria can thrive in
the throat without much harm, but when toxins are released from the bacteria,
muscles can become paralyzed and death can ensue.
A final type of vaccine contains living microorganisms that have been
rendered harmless. With this type of vaccine, a large number of antigen molecules
are produced and the immunity that results is generally longer lasting than the
immunity from other types of vaccines. The Sabin oral antipolio vaccine and the BCG
vaccine against tuberculosis are examples of this type of vaccine.

Common types of calendars can be based on the Sun or on the Moon. The solar
calendar is based on the solar year. Since the solar year is 365.2422 days long, solar
calendars consist of regular years of 365 days and have an extra day every fourth
year, or leap year, to make up for the additional fractional amount. In a solar
calendar, the waxing and waning of the Moon can take place at various stages of each
month.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882) was perhaps the best-known


American poet of the nineteenth century. His clear writing style and emphasis on the
prevalent values of the period made him popular with the general public if not
always with the critics. He was particularly recognized for Line his longer narrative
poems Evangeline, The Song of Hiawatha, and The Courtship of Miles Standish, in
which he told stories from American history in terms of the values of the time.
Evangeline was set during the French and Indian War (1754–1763), when the
British forced French settlers from Nova Scotia; two lovers, Gabriel and Evangeline,
were separated by the British, and Evangeline devoted her lifetime to the search for
Gabriel. With its emphasis on sentimental, undying love, Evangeline was immensely
popular with the public.
In The Song of Hiawatha, Longfellow depicted the noble life of the American Indian
through the story of the brave Hiawatha and his beloved wife Minehaha. The tear-
inspiring poem follows Hiawatha through the tragedies and triumphs of life, ending
with the death of Minehaha and Hiawatha’s departure into the sunset in his canoe.
The Courtship of Miles Standish takes place during the early period of the
settlement of New (15) England, a period which was viewed as a time of honor and
romance. In this poem centered around a love triangle, Miles Standish asks his friend
John Alden to propose to Priscilla Mullins for him; John Alden ends up marrying
Priscilla Mullins himself, and it takes time for his friendship with Miles Standish to
recover. As with Longfellow’s other narrative poems, the emphasis on high ideals
and romance made the poem extremely popular.

Hurricanes generally occur in the North Atlantic from May through

Parents send their children to school with the best of intentions, believing
that formal education is what kids need to become productive, happy adults. Many
parents do have qualms about how well schools are performing, but the
conventional wisdom is that these issues can be resolved with more money, better
teachers, more challenging curricula, or more rigorous tests. But what if the real
problem is school itself? The unfortunate fact is that one of our most cherished
institutions is, by its very nature, failing our children and our society.
Children are required to be in school, where their freedom is greatly
restricted, far more than most adults would tolerate in their workspaces. In recent
decades, we have been compelling them to spend ever more time in this kind of
setting, and there is a strong evidence that this is causing psychological damage to
many of them. And as scientists have investigated how children naturally learn,
they have realized that kids do most deeply and fully, and with greatest
enthusiasm, in conditions that are almost opposite to those school.
Compulsory education has been a fixture of our culture now for several
generations. President Obama and Secretary of Education Anne Duncan are so
enamoured of it that they want even longer school days and years. Most people
assume that the basic design of today’s schools emerged from scientific evidence
about how children learn. But nothing could be further from the truth.
Schools as we know them today are a product of history, not of research. The
blueprint for them was developed during the Protestant Reformation, when
schools were created to teach children to read the bible to believe Scripture
without questioning it, and to obey authority figures without questioning them.
When schools were taken over by the state, made compulsory, and directed
toward secular ends, the basic structure and methods of teaching remained
unchanged. Subsequent attempts at reform have failed because they have not
altered blueprint. The top down, teach and test method, in which learning is
motivated by a system of reward and punishments rather than by curiosity or by
any real desire to know, is well designed for indoctrination and obedience training
but not much else. It is no wonder that many of the world’s greatest entrepreneurs
and innovators either left school early (like Thomas Edison) or said they hated
school and learned despite it, not because of it (like Albert Einstein).
