Course Description:
The subject will focus on P.D. 612 as amended by RA 10607, focusing on the concept, functions and
characteristics of insurance contracts; what may be insured; insurable interest; devices for ascertaining
risk of loss (concealment and representation; warranties; exceptions); premium; the concepts of loss,
notice and proof of loss; double insurance; reinsurance; classes of insurance; the business of insurance
and regulation of the insurance industry. Class discussions will be focused on jurisprudence. An outline of
the topics will be provided.
Learning outcome
The primary objective is for students to know and understand the principles of insurance law and their
application. Secondarily, the course aims to help students realize the importance of insurance, the role it
plays for the future and security of individuals and businesses, and its impact to the legal system.
Course output
(1) There will be recitation/reporting every class, and it is expected that at the end of the course,
students will be able to intelligently discuss and answer questions on insurance law and its
application to specific situations.
(3) Students are to submit a compiled handwritten case digest of the assigned cases.
Grading:
(1) Recitation/Report: 20%
(2) Mid-term Exam: 30%
