DETERMINATION OF FINENESS OF CEMENT

PURPOSE : To determine the fineness of cement by dry sieving.

IS CODE : IS: 269 & IS:4031

APPARATUS : Standard balance of accuracy 0.1 gram, Brush, 90 micron sieve, stop watch.

PROCEDURE :

 Break down any air-set lumps in the cement sample with fingers and at a rate of pull
of 50.0 ± 2.5 mm/min.
 Weigh accurately 100 gm of the cement and place it on a standard 90 micron IS
sieve.
 Weight the residue left after 15 minutes of sieving. This completes the test. 1).

CALCULATIONS :
 The percentage weight of residue over the total sample is reported.

 % weight of residue=(Wt.of sample retained on the sieve/Total weight of the sample)

LIMITS :

 As per IS the percentage residue should not exceed 10% for OPC and 5% for PPC.

FREQUENCY :

 One test per lot.
