A cornucopia of cigarillos
Unlike cigars, cigarillos are made by machine and can have
a filter. Like cigarettes, they can be made with cut tobacco
but also using threshed tobacco. Cigarillos generally have
a diameter of around 12 mm and are rarely longer than
10 to 12 cm. Initially, they are wrapped by machine using
recon paper. At one time, all cigarillos looked fairly similar
but today the diversity of forms is much greater – even in
comparison to cigarettes. The head can be bare, fitted with
a filter, a plastic tip or shaped. The rod is always single
wrapped but can also be wrapped in a spiral shape with
recon paper or natural leaf. The head of the cigarillo can
be left “raw”, wrapped in tipping paper or adorned with a
Siegmar Weiß, cigarillo expert at Decouflé. The new Nano-C
cigarillo maker now provides the perfect starting point. It
builds on the technology platform used by the Nano range,
which was launched in 2009. Outstanding features include
modern electronics, a highly efficient ceramic heating plate
for the bonding process, reliable regulation of tobacco
weight and a highly advanced cutting head in the cutting
unit. “For the customer, this translates into high quality,
speed and reliability, shorter conversion and maintenance
times and cost efficient production,” adds Weiß.
The Nano-C cigarillo maker can do all this – and much more
besides. The specialists at Decouflé have refined it specifi-
cally for cigarillo production. The machine is ideal for han-

he cigarillo market is changing. Comparatively
high tobacco taxes on cigarettes and fine-cut to-
bacco are making cigarillos – which are subject
to a significantly lower tax rate – an increasingly attrac-
tive substitute for consumers. In 2015, 72 percent of the
retail price of a standard cigarette in Germany was tax. In
contrast, tax accounted for only 27 percent of the price
of a standard cigarillo and just 22 percent of that of a
premium cigarillo. The situation is similar in other highly
industrialised countries.
This growth in consumer interest is also persuading man-
ufacturers to focus more closely on the cigarillo market.
