LANGUAGES: THE BASIS OF COMMUNICATION.

There are approximately eight thousand languages spoken in the

world. Mandarin, Spanish and English are the most widely used of all
languages. English language is most commonly used as a second
language. It is has become a requirement for: work, business,
collaboration, travel, online learning and is the first language you'll
learn in school. A foreign language is a language not spoken by the
native people of their country and English will be part of their
curriculum for learning.

Language is the most important skill you can acquire in life. It is the
basis of all other skills, including reading, writing, and mathematics.

Learning a language is a lifelong process that is essential to the overall

development as a person. It is the basis of communication and the
foundation of all human interaction.

Language is the most powerful tool we have, and it is also the most
misunderstood. Many people think that they already know how to
speak a language. However, it is not until you actually start to learn a
language that you realize how much you don't know. You may think
that you are fluent in English (many English teachers do not know all
the grammar when they begin teaching) for example, but if you have
not even mastered the basics such as: spelling, grammar, and sentence
structure then you are not fluent. At this stage of development, you are
only just beginning to learn the language.

Learning any language is not a matter of just memorizing a list of

words and phrases. If you have learned to speak a language, you have
learned how to communicate. Fluency, or the ability to communicate
effectively in a language, is not the same as speaking a language.

PAGE 1
Fluency is the ability to communicate in a language using the correct
structure. This includes the correct grammar, the correct vocabulary,
and the correct syntax; meaning the correct ordering and arrangement
of words that form a sentence.

This set of rules is different in every language and is one of the most
important to understand when conveying meaning. The skills of
reading, writing, and speaking all rely on the structure of the language.

Every language has a structure that allows you to communicate

effectively. This structure is not the same as the grammar and
vocabulary of the language. As you learn a language, you will gradually
change the structure of your language, and this will change the way
you communicate.

LANGUAGE LEARNING: THE BASICS.

As you learn a language your ability to communicate and

understand others will change. You will become more comfortable and
more effective in communicating with others using the language.

When you understand the language, you'll understand the culture and
your experience will become more immersive. When you learn how to
express yourself in the language, it will help you express yourself in a
culture.

Learning how to write in the language will allow you to express

yourself through meaning in the language.

As you learn how to read in the language, you will also begin to
understand the complex differences of regional dialects. You may also
learn some local colloquialisms, (local street talk) of the region you're
in.
