The main objective of this research is to understand the meaning of communication and its
types

INTRODUCTION :

Communication of characters in movie with respect to the verbal , non verbal and
psychological factors in the movie were explained in this thesis.

This movie is related to the death of an 8yrs old minor boy by a negligent act of a doctor.
This is a real life incident which occurred on a surgery table .The fight of a mother on behalf
of the death of her son after knowing the reason of death by a intern doctor as the negligent
act of a doctor who had done the surgery which resulted in death of her son ,with the help of
her friend and the intern doctor they decided to fight against the medical negligent act of
doctor and the authorities of hospital and approached a lady advocate who is initially a
corrupted in her profession but after few incidents in her life ,changes her and latter she will
come to know the value of a child and will fight against the doctor and the hospital authority
and few corrupted advocates, and officials involved in the case.

5. Intern surgeons :Dr.riya and Dr.Romesh (interns under Dr,Asthana )

7. Public prosecutor on the defending side for Dr.Asthana

Ankur was a 8yrs boy suffering from a severe stomach pain his mother was worried about
her son and approaches a famous surgeon Dr.Asthana , he directs Dr.Romesh to identify the
cause of pain then he suggest for a abdominal scan ,in that it was identified as a
appendisitces and Dr.Romesh informs the situation to Dr.Asthana and he suggested ankurs
mother for a surgery to solve the issue , she accepted for that and surgery was performed by
Dr.Asthana with the assistance of Dr.Riya and few other doctors and nurses.

Dr.Asthana said Ankurs mother to feed the food before 6-8 hours before the surgery . But due
too few reasons without the knowledge of anyone ankur eate’s biscuits as he was feeling
hungry . Dr.Asthana came to know the issue but he forgets to use the Ryles tube to clean
food he performs surgery due to which the food becomes poison and he went to the position
of brain dead latter it resulted the death of ankur .

As a responsible doctor Dr.Asthana has the responsible to check pre surgery proceeding but
with the negligence he became the reason for the death of ankur , after the incident
Dr.Asthana realises his mistake but it was irreversible as Dr.Riya and other doctors were
also there during the surgery Dr.Asthan was not in a position to escape so he threatens that
if they reveal the fact they will also has to face the consequences and asked them to suppress
the truth and asks to say that the lungs were collapsed during the surgery due to which he
couldn’t breathe and went to brain dead condition which resulted in death of ankur .

Every one believed the words of Dr.Asthana and ankur mother was also in the same belief
but latter Dr.Romesh who becomes very close to ankur feels something is went wrong and
extracts the truth from Dr.Riya and become emotional and reveals ankur mother the fact .

COMMUNICATION WITH RESPECT TO THE COURT SCENES OF

THE MOVIE

Types of communication:

1. Verbal

2. Non verbal
4
School of Law

3. Pyschological

Mode of communication: Here in the court scene the mode was linguistic mode .which
meant there was only oral mode going on in which linguistic mean organised and word
choice delivers happen since it was the court, everything spoken would come under
consideration

VERBAL COMMUNICATION:

Verbal communication means sending an intentional message to listener with the use of
words may be both spoken or written which understood clearly by the person to whom
communication is made.

Ex: - letters, E-mails, telephone calls, face to face communication here, verbal
communication is divided into:-

1. Paralanguage –way of emotion conveyed , pitch of voice, etc

⮚ Here the way the prosecution i.e. the petitioner advocate kajori sen was on a high
pitch to prove guilty on the defendants side . she firstly explained what actually
happened accordingly to which Dr.Romesh has said .That ankur had eaten something
before the operation and this thing Dr.Asthana was informed but he forgot to use the
Ryle’s tube to remove the food .which turned as poison and took ankur into coma and
which lead to the death of ankur within 2 days.
⮚ Now the other side of prosecution was in very confident and sarcastic manner that all
the things said by the opposition were false and it happened because of the lungs
collapse of ankur .And he was in a tone that they filed the case just to defame the
hospital reputation.

2. Inductive reasoning - Is used to determine properties or relationships based on previous

observations or experiences, and then to formulate general statements or laws based on
limited observations of recurring phenomenal patterns.

⮚ Here the petitioner brought in the first evidence that was the blow up of a ledger was
ankur’s details were lodged in before his operation.

“It was written that time before last meal 9 hours”

5

Here, a handwriting specialist was brought just to know was that 9 hours true or not .So here
the expert uses his previous observation and knowledge in this case .

3. Deductive reasoning -also called deductive logic, is the process of reasoning from one or

more general statements, laws, or principles regarding what are known, in order to reach a
logically certain conclusion.

⮚ Now, next the prosecution on other side i.e. the defendant side wanted to cross
examine the patients mother Nanditha .And they brought a form on which nanditha
has signed before the operation of Ankur ,it was the operational guidelines and here
now if the person sign on the form it’s not that they read the whole 5 -10 pages of the
guidelines .and here in the movie and that operation form it was given “patient
should be EBM 6-8 hours”. And now which person who signs the forms will know
the all medical terms. And here the defendants blame the mother being irresponsible.

NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION:

Non verbal communication is the transformation of message or information by one person to

the other person by the way of signs, facial expressions, gestures etc.

1. Facial expressions- A facial expression is one or more motions or positions of the

muscles beneath the skin of the face. According to one set of controversial theories, these
movements convey the emotional state of an individual to observers.

⮚ In the starting of the case prosecution on the petitioner side Kajori Sen was acting as
if she is helping the victims .but she and the opposition advocate both were together,
and wanted to drag this case as much as possible so that they would fill their
pockets .this whole thing would be conveyed to the viewer when we see an expression
were the advocate gives a look to the advocate on other side.
⮚ Whenever kajori sen brings up a new witness and try to lead the case ,the facial
expression of Dr.asthana would show us how tensed and scared of being guilty was
shown .sometimes his face would even have proud that no one can do whom anything
⮚ Whereas the mother nanditha and Dr.Romesh always had a confident feel in their
faces that they will get justice.
⮚ Dr.riya was also present in the court and her expression was so sad and clearly her
expression showed that she was guilty.

⮚ When kajori brings in witness who wasn’t present in the witness list .the prosecution
other side got so tensed and the advocate shouted aloud to have a time for defence.

2. Body language –Body language is the range of nonverbal signals that you use to
communicate your feelings and intentions

⮚ Here both advocates have a body language of moving here and there in front of
the judge and moving their hands accordingly while trying to explain things.
⮚ And sometimes Dr.astana also in fear of listening the prosecutions he would do
some involuntary actions which happened without knowingly.
⮚ Kajori sen appeals for the permission of 4 days time recess. Here her body
language was so pleasing and confident enough because they got one of the
greatest evidence.

3. proxemics- The study of the nature, degree, and effect of the spatial separation
individuals naturally maintain (as in various social and interpersonal situations) and of how
this separation relates to environmental and cultural factors.

⮚ In this court scene the environment in the court was completely calm and only the
prosecutions and the judge were talking and there was a public spacing between
the advocates and the judge i.e. 12-25feets distance. Whereas the advocates had a
social space of 4-12 feets distance .And the advocates while sitting on each sides
had just personal space i.e. 1-4 feet.
⮚ Here they were addressing the judge as “my lord”. And that was the culture in
court scene.

PSYCHOLOGICAL COMMUNICATION:

Psychological communication comes under the head of non verbal communication which
involves the emotion of a person which is observed by the other and understood the
psychological feeling like pitch of voice like sad or happiness and body language through
which an expression is observed by the opposite person.

1. Emotional quotient -Is the ability to understand, use, and manage your own emotions
in positive ways to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathize with others,
overcome challenges and defuse conflict.

7

⮚ Then kajori seen has bought another witness who wasn’t present in the witness list she
was the nurse who informed Dr.asthana regarding ankur eating some biscuits .she was
evicted and sent underground.
But when she was presented she after knowing all the truth and she emotionally so
heavy but still she turned hostile.
⮚ Even Dr.riya with lot of emotion also turns hostile.
⮚ In the starting of the case kajori sen and the other advocate were together but after a
very bad incident kajori changes herself and understood the value of child, and fights
very honestly for the case.
2. Mistrust -To have no trust or confidence in

⮚ Dr.Romesh and advocate kajori sen also believed in the nurse Rosina and made her sit
in the witness box but she broke their trust by turning hostile.
⮚ There was a final hope for kajori to win the case and that was by the acceptances of
Dr.riya to tell the truth as she was the eye witness for the thing happened .but even
she breaks the trust of Dr.romesh and everyone by turning hostile.

3. Halo effect- Is the tendency for positive impressions of a person, company, brand or
product in one area to positively influence one's opinion or feelings in other areas.
⮚ Here the prosecution other being a brand “the shekwat general hospitals, the most
influential business man ,destroys one of the important evidence the vomit sample
which was done by Ankur while the operation .Hence, there was no clue or chance
to say that the hospital nor Dr.Asthana would prove guilty.
⮚ In this case the tendency of postiveness and the true feelings didn’t win in the
court room.

Conclusion:

Finally the justice was not delivered in the court but where as it was proved by Dr.Riya who
intelligently recorded everything which Dr.asthana was confessing in his office. Now I
conclude my thesis .I have divided the court scene of the movie of a better understanding of
the types of communication.
